Can't really afford to keep bike and car running, so decided to chop car in for about £100
The MOT has expired, and I am not chucking money at it!

Anyways... it has been insured since October 07, so expires this Oct
Called Budget to let them know I needed to cancel... ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE QUID!!
£90 early charge as they don't do 'short term insurance' (ie under a year), and £35 cancellation fee

So, basically, that is costing me OVER the odds, as my monthly car insurance was £27. I may as well have paid up until September! That would be £108!!

Robbin cnuts
I need to rob a bank
sigh

Just keep the insurance and get the no claims bonus out of it.

That would be a gamble unless the car is being scrapped. If the new buyer then insures it then 2 policies will show on the MID.

Expect some questions from the Police should the new owner then get tugged.

WOW!

Fucking hell! Talk about a coincidence!

I have just chopped my car in. I scrapped it and got £100.

My insurance also runs out in October.

I also cancelled my insurance, ALSO with Budget tonight.

I am also BREWING that I will not see any refund from my £230 premium even though I have only been using them 7 months. Budget are robbing bastards. £30 for a change of address, too.

Blimey Jodie, I feel your pain, sister. Let's not use them again, let's put it behind us and look forward to a cracking summer.

What a lovely company they are....
Just goes to show how carefully you should read the t/c.....

Quote:
A car insurance policy can be cancelled by notifying us at any point prior to the policy expiry date. A policy may be cancelled with immediate effect or at a date in the future

Which is than followed a lot lower down the page with.... But not mentioned at all....

Quote:
The application of short-term rates is a common practice throughout the car insurance industry
These rates are applied when a customer cancels their car insurance policy early. The customer has failed to stay insured with us over the agreed period of time. Had we known at the inception of the policy that the customer only wanted the car insurance for a reduced time period we would have charged a higher premium at the onset of the agreement. If the customer cancels early we are entitled to apply the higher premium rates, called short-term premium rates. Higher premiums apply to car insurance policies held for reduced time periods because of the increased risks to insurance companies from fraudulent claims activity
If an annual car insurance policy is cancelled during the cover, short-term premium rates are applied. This means that customers who have paid the premium in full by a lump sum payment are only entitled to a percentage of the paid premium as a refund
Customers paying by instalments usually owe some money to cover the short-term premium rates. The amount of premium retained depends on those rates in force at the time of the cancellation and the month in which the cancellation takes place

What a major rip off....
I would lodge a complaint with the ones listed here.
https://www.budgetinsurance.com/complaintsprocedures.aspx

Now i can understand why they don't give a straight pro-rota refund as there are costs to be factored in. But to actually charge more is bordering on the illegal.
Maybe look at OFT as well, maybe this bunch of crooks can be their next target with OTT fee's and excessive cancelation charges...

I know the say the following but surely the less time you spend driving a car the less risk there is of a pay out which would surely offset the fraudulent claims?

It should say we're robbing bastards and can do pretty much whatever we like.

Reading those T+C it is clear they are a bunch of clowns, unfortunately you have probably agreed to those conditions somewhere along the line.

I'd still be tempted to not pay them another penny on principle of the thing, they haven't lost anything you haven't claimed, so short of a few hours paperwork they still made money off you.

You scrapped the car, therefore you no longer need the insurance, what right they have to charge you for a service you won't be recieving i'm not entirely sure.

Having said all that, you will probably just find the bailiffs after you a few months down the line, so in this fucked up society it is always best to bend over if you like a quiet life.

To be honest i wouldn't pay them a penny, you can't be refused insurance elsewhere because of it and to get the bailiffs around they'll need to go to court which is probably not worth the hassle for them.

If you do go this route be prepared to ignore some strongly worded letters threatening all sorts.

MCA tried something similar with me, they got the details of my bike wrong, when i noticed they insured me on a YZF1000 instead of a YZR-R1 they asked me to stump up the extra money. When i told them i wouldn't be doing that and cancelled my policy they asked me to pay a cancellation fee which was more than the difference between the cost of insurance on the two bikes.

I promptly told them to f*ck themselves, after a few months they gave up trying to get their money.

So what? I don't think it's illegal to have insurance on a car you don't own, is it?

I never said it was illegal, just expect some questions. I don't even know the slightest thing about law but would expect the police to see why 2 people are insuring a car.

I cant see that it is 'legal' per se, to attempt to improve your no claims discount entitlement by insuring a car you do not have.

Suppose you're right. Plus if the new owner has a hit'n'run then it may well come back to your insurance company.
