PostPosted: 19:51 - 14 May 2008    Post subject: New bike, first service free??? Reply with quote

OK bought a new R1 last monday and I needed to rack up 600 miles over the weekend to get it in its first service today. This is due to me going to Le Mans on friday. So, I put it in for its service today and they called me when it is ready. They then decided to tell me that there was £48.50 on my account for the oil and the oil filter. Shocked Confused Confused I specifically remember that the salesman told me that the 'first service was free'. The service chap deemed to inform me that it is the labour that is free and not the whole service.

I manged to not pay for it as there were a few hickups in the set up of the sale. So I am not out of pocket. Very Happy Thumbs Up

Now, forgive me if I am wrong but when I hear 'The first service is free', I dont expect to pay for anything. My question is, is this a normal thing, that they charge for parts Question

Dealers are sneaky bastids - first service is nothing more than an oil change and check-over anyway, so the labour is usually almost insignificant. I bet very few of them change the filter and just do the oil and give it a once-over.

Best thing to do is mark it and see if it's changed. Whenever I change my oil I always fit K&N filters (the socket end makes life easier) so I know immediately if a dealer has changed it or not because they have to put the offical one on.

In fact a dealer was running through the parts breakdown after a service for me - £5 for a gasket... I asked where for. The bloke said "the one needed on the oil filter". I told him that you don't need a gasket for an oil filter - he immediately apologised and said it must have been a mistake and took it off.
Be wise, they'll try and get a few extra quid from you if they can!

Std practise you have to pay for the consumables.

I would get a mate to ring and ask the price for oil and filter for the same bike as you have and see waht price they quote, or if the parts bit is seperate ask yourself.
£48 seems a bit steep for a filter and what a max of 5ltr of oil.

As far as I am aware most Japanese manufacturers subsidise the first service. I am pretty sure it is meant to be labour and consumable free. Where I work we sometimes offer first service free on our MV's and Benellis as part of the sale but we are not subsidised by those manufacturers.

If the salesperson offers a free first service then they should put that in writing at the point of sale. Thumbs Up

Thanks for all your comments, looks like you would have to pay for parts then. It is a bit f*cked up really that you as the buyer have to pay for the parts that the manufacturer are asking you to add on the bike, personally I think the manufactureres should fork out for the cost of the parts.

from most manufactures you'll get the labour free and only have to pay oil and filters, which at 30 odd quid is fairly reasonable , unless you own an aprilia of course then you get raped Wink

I've bought 3 brand new Hondas and the 1st service was completely free for all of them.

Honda's policy may well have changed since then though.

My Trumpy had it's first service yesterday, that was supposed to be free. I got a bill for 56 odd quid, the oil alone was almost 40 of that!

Free labour but paying for consumables is normal, I think the problem arises when salesmen just say 'free service', instead of making clear that it is only the labour content that is free. Our salesman has done it a few times and I've had to tell him off, if I'm doing any selling I always stress that the consumables are chargeable.

See how much they charge for oil. They buy in bulk so should pass the saving on, ask for the old parts to be returned, also they will charge VAT on top of the part +vat so you pay twice andthey keep the extra.

Why not?

They're not a charity, and if you're going to a main dealer, you're going to pay main dealer prices.

Personally I wouldn't trust a mechanic to do more than flick an oily rag in the general direction of my bike, so it's really up to you whether it's worthwhile paying that to get a dealer stamp in your service book.

If you don't like it, you can go to an independent, or DIY it, and staple the receipts into your service book.
