The battery will be of use for the electrics, therefore if you have a kickstart, a dead battery is irrelevant until you intend to use the lights etc. However if you rely on an electric start, then you will need a charged battery in order for it to operate the parts required to turn the engine over!

Use the kick start, cgs can run without a battery, mine did for 7 months with only minor problems (even worse lighting than standard at low revs)

Cheers

You let it tick over for an hour? It probably overheated.

highly unlikely for it to overheat. mine gets used on trails often, were i rarely get over 20mph due to road conditions and it gets revved to hell and the clutch abused a lot. 2 hours later the engine is just a bit warm, not got to the stage of me getting worried about it.

Cheers
John

If the fuel tap is 'ON' or 'RESERVE'

Try taking the spark plug out, put the lead back onto it and use some pliers to hold the metal part of the plug against the engine. Then turn the engine over (you may need a helper), and see if there is a spark at the end of the spark plug.
If there is NO spark then replace the spark plug with a new one and try again.
If there is a spark - check that your choke is not fully open (i have never had to use my choke even in winter). Turn the engine over a few times (just in case you have flooded the engine).
Put the spark plug in again and try to start.
If still it won't start - remove spark plug and check if it is wet with fuel. If it is not - check that fuel is getting to the carb by removing the drain screw on the bottom of the carb until fuel comes out. If fuel does come out then retighten screw, if not then there is a fuel fault somewhere.
Work your way back from the carb to the fuel tap checking as you go that fuel is reaching where it should. You may need to remove the tap and clean the filter inside.
Once fuel is reaching the carb, try again. If still no joy, then you may need to have the timing checked. I will paste a link to a copy of the haynes manual for your bike below. Good luck and keep us informed. Thumbs Up

First thing, new plug. The old one will be contaminated as a big dirty thing after idling for an hour.
