hi, as the title says really...

I have a textile jacket (Akito Edge) with waterproof inner and armour but its got so dirty now with oil and general muck that ive stopped wearing it....

It says to hand wash it in 30 degree water and not to put in washing machine or not dry clean.

anybody got any tips any products to use to get the oil out??

sorry for turning this into a housewives (househusbands Rolling Eyes pc!) thing!!

With my textiles I take the armor out and then sling them in the washing machine on a 30 degree wash and then stick them outside to dry off. I have no trouble getting any of the muck out of them either doing it this way.

Mine says 30º and not to use a washing machine.

I just removed all armour and linings, zipped up the jacket and stuck it in the washing machine on the Lingerie/delicates 30º wash cycle and turned the dry spin cycle off which is important. Do not use fabric conditioner as it damages the waterproofness.

The cold wash cycle also works. You can put a dose of handwashing powder in the machine too as washing machine powder/liquid can also damage the waterproofness.

I've washed my jacket and trousers twice in the machine and I regularly wash the liners in the machine. No adverse effects have been noticed yet.

Are you not going to lose some of the water repellant-ness if you wash in soapy water?

Yes but you can buy a spray that re-treats the material. Thumbs Up

Another vote for Nikwax, absolutely tremendous stuff. Especially if you have white bits on your textiles, brought mine back from the verge of poohbrown to gleaming white again. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

You can also buy water repellant stuff which you can also chuck in the washing machine which works out cheaper than buying the sprays and seems to work better. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the stuff I use but if you pop into your local bike shop i'm sure they will probably have some.

as mentioned above.

use nikwax tech wash to wash the jacket. you can usually wash it in this stuff about 2-3 times before you need to re-proof it.

when it comes to re-proofing it, i recommend the spray on nikwax TX direct rather than the wash-in one. The spray allows you to apply the layers/amount of proofing you want. The spray on is also advisable if your jacket has a certain type of breathable lining.

I should know, I sell the stuff lol.

hope this helps

I chuck mine in the washing machine at work, on a hand wash cycle, with no products going in, then I hang them up to drip dry, or if i can bear the noise I put them on a blow cycle in the steam cabinet, but then i have the advantage of working for a dry cleaners with industrial washing machines. I do need to re-proof it though as it has been washed a few times now.
