...driving around on quads?

Most of them 17 by the way, not disabled and certainly don't look like farmers.

What's the point? The insurance is higher than a car and they look stupid.

Are they not man enough for two wheels?

I'm wondering if when these kids start cracking skulls like eggs because they are dangerous on tarmac, if bikes are going to get even more bad rep.
I hope not, but yeah i will say quads are ridden by pricks on the road. Some goon pulled up next to me the other day with his mate, Oakely sunglasses on, no helmet, t-shirt, shorts.....i thought, fu**off mate, this aint home and away. Rolling Eyes

I don't think they're any more dangerous than a bike, but they're not any less dangerous either.

The problem is that 4 wheels gives you an increased sense of confidence which isn't entirely justified, as if you hit a kerb or brake too hard going round a corner then you're still going arse-over-tit just the same as you would on a bike.

People can ride or drive what they want, but WHY would you want one? If you want something fun for the summer, just buy a bike for fuck's sake!

Trying to corner those things on tarmac making progress is a lot harder than you think. They are pretty manic.

If they are 17, they either aren't insured or have VERY rich parents.

It is incredibly hard to get insured on a quad under 19, but if you do find someone that will insure you, you are looking at multiple thousands.

I've ridden one off-road once and didn't think it was so bad, but I suppose on tarmac you'd be moving a lot faster, and with such a small wheelbase I can't see them being that safe.

I did a day farmers course on some big quads, and i've ridden some on private land. Off road, it's bloody funny, i love it.
On road though, they have the ability to bite back, not quite like a bike though. It's the weird sensation of going into a corner and the unatural feeling you get when the bars are one way, you lean another and it feels like it's gonna tip over. Maybe i'm wrong and road quads are designed differently, i just can't see it myself, they're just built that way.

Because they are easily availible cheap now. The auto trader here for a while in the bike section was full of them and bike shops now stock them. I doubt some have insurance, usually young ones just take them up fields and annoy local residents with the noise.

The cornering all depends on the rear axle, some of them haves diffs which are a lot easier to turn at speed than the ones with a solid bar rear axle, with the bar both rear wheels are turning at the same speed so when your cornering fast you have to try and slide it round.

A bit like a go-kart then?

Surely that's not road-legal?

Which may be part of the fun, you know.

You like bikes more than cars, some people like quads more than bikes.

The level of hypocrisy on BCF is amazing.

How many of you would piss and moan when a car driver says the same about us and bikes?

I dont mean car drivers that ride as well.

People prefer different things, if someone wants a quad, so what?

You want a bike and you have one.

As I said: People can ride or drive whatever they want. I'm just wondering why I'm seeing more and more quads nowadays.

I see them round Leeds City Centre showing off round the University area.

They cannot ride safely for love nor money.

Arrow Tailgating.

Arrow Undertaking/overtaking when the car infront brakes due to reason number 1

Arrow No safety gear whatsoever.

Arrow Dangerous Riding.

Arrow Although the machine seems to be road legal, I doubt the rider is.

Each to their own, but it is another black mark against the Motorcycle industry that it doesn't need.

I'm talking about how dangerous they are on the UK public roads due to their setup and riders usually wearing nothing but T-shirt and shorts without a lid. Yeah of course if it's legal, do it, i'm not fussed.

No different to the way people view bikes, and some wearing nothing but a t-shirt is not a danger on the UK public roads.

If the quads are road legal then they are no more a danger than any bike or car thats road legal, its whining about something you don't particularly want to do on the road for the sake of whining.

Not aimed at you direct Killa, I just wish people would put some thought into things before they become hypocrites, its a bit like babyyams thread where the police are saying ALL bikers are to be afraid of.

Just seems to me its the next thing after "chavs" on peds for you lot to moan about.

Just because you don't get it doesn't mean its shit or wrong, its like trikes.

I understand where your coming from Guv but seriously riding a quad on the road isn't a brilliant idea.
It can be done, so now the laws are in place for it, you'll see more people on them.

And some could say riding bikes on the road isn't a brilliant idea.

Its not about the machine, its the way its used.

If some one crashes a quad because they acted stupidly then its no different to some one crashing a bike because they acted stupidly.

Ghost rider rides like a twat yet gets applauded, how many quads ride as mentally as him?

You cant judge quad riders in general on the actions of a few, again, just like bikes.

EDIT*****

Just had to add this...... Look at it from this point of view.

How many times have you typed on here that you are pissed off at people for judging you for your music?

Equates to the same thing really.

You like drum and bass and all that mentalist jungle stuff, it doesn't mean you are going to rob my gran of her fish supper.

I agree with you there mate, but I can see how they could be very dangerous (not just to the driver, but to everyone around) if they have a solid rear axle.

Ever driven a go-kart? Did you notice how difficult turning was unless you used the accelerator at the same time, and how liable it was to spin?

I suppose most trikes are the same, for that matter. Whereas bikes and cars generally go where you point them.

As I said, people can do what they want - I'm sure it's perfectly possible to ride a quad safely on the road, but I have seen some completely idiotic driving and that's what pisses me off.

In the same way as I don't have any problem with 'chavs' riding scooters, but when you see them pissing about with their mate on the back with no helmet, attempting to wheelie and stoppie everywhere with no clue how to ride the thing, you cringe because you know that one day they're going to have the most momentous 'OH SHIT!'.

Also, I would imagine it's far easier to hurt someone else when you come flying off a quad, because assuming it stays the right way up it will just keep going unlike a bike which will tip over.

My dad is thinking of selling his Hornet and getting one for driving to work on lol.

Not quite sure why. I'll still have a go anyways.

Cornering them is tricky business though.

You’re missing my point. It’s not about me or you or a quad rider. Like I said, I don’t care people want to buy quads for the road now.
Cars and bikes are dangerous enough. But I know that with the right training on the road a bike and a car are a lot safer than a quad. This is not because of a few people I’ve seen blatting around on them, that’s not the point I’m making.
I’m saying on the UK public roads quads are not an ideal mode of transport, I’m sure you would agree if you went out on one and rode it how you like for a day, combine this with the fact it seems that most riders don’t wear a lid and don’t wear much in the way of protective clothing it’s not a great idea adding them to the list of vehicles on British roads.

I had a race with a fast one in Andorra once. It went around corners like it was stuck to the road with superglue, and in a straight line matched my nc30 up to 100mph.

The rider was wearing t-shirt, shorts and sunglasses so I'd say he was more man than I Laughing

To be fair.. Some quads look amazingly nice.

Personally i like this 1 a lot.

https://www.atvworld.com/roadlegal/quads/standard-road-legal-raptorL.jpg

More and more people have them because they probably are good fun. The 1 near me spends most his time on 2 wheels around islands etc.
