Dealer lying to me.

Right, I managed to get an above average price for my Fiesta part exchange.

So when we agreed the terms the dealer had to pick the car up from Manchester as it was at another of the franchises dealerships.

He said that it would be ready to pick up this afternoon. Also said he would ring me on Wednesday to confirm the delivery date. By 4PM I had no phone call, so thought i'd be pro-active and call him myself. Got hold of a lovely lady who said to me that he had gone up to Manchester to pick up my car.

I then (probably rather stupidly) changed the insurance over to the new car to start from noon today.

Went past the dealership on Wednesday evening to take a look at the car while they were closed to see if there was anything wrong with it, not that I could see on the outside. Let me re-iterate that this is the car I ordered as it was the same reg and colour.

So I rang him this morning bearing in mind he had not contacted me all week. He said that "he still had to take delivery of the car as the other dealership were having trouble getting the car out of Manchester yesterday due to the Rangers fiasco."

I just agreed with what he was saying at the time as at the time I was cooking and couldn't be arsed to argue the toss.

What shall I do? Call his bluff and give him the chance to redeem himself with a bit of honesty as now I am concerned that there might be a problem with the car which he is trying to rectify before I take ownership of it.

I bloody paid my insurance company £5.50 to ensure that a cover note be sent to the dealers address to have the tax put on the car

The crux of the issue for me now is that I am now uninsured on my Fiesta. So can't go around getting the shopping. Not sure if I can be insured on both cars until I get the new one picked up.

To be honest i'm tempted to drive there and confront him face to face, anybody can lie over the phone but it will be incredibly hard for him to worm out of it in person.

I suspect he probably just cannot be arsed to get the tax for the new car.

Absolute quality.

I just rang him up and said that his argument didn't quite add up.

His stuttering and diversion of the question was absolutely classic. He said that he went to pick up another car, I said that I saw the car I had bought and it had the same registration number.

He shuffled a lot and said he "can't remember" picking up my car and said he will check out the back and in the forecourt to see if it is there.

Ringing me back in two minutes. Can't wait to hear his response.

Actually, just as I typed that he did ring back and said "Whoa, you are right it is here!"

Then said that the car is booked into the workshop obviously for a service on Monday. I told him my insurance has expired on my Fiesta and he said he will see if they can get the car looked at earlier. Will call me back in an hour.

Looks like I will have to physically check to see if the car actually was serviced as I can see this turning into a non-serviced car to get it to me quickly.

He was probably experiencing problems getting it in for service and was attempting to give himself a bit of leeway by not contacting you and banking on the fact that you wouldn't contact him (you'll be surprised how many people are pretty backward at coming forward when it comes to things like this - must be something to do with the British psyche!).

Ask him what the service entails - My guess would be change of Oil/Filter at the bare minimum.

At least you'll be able to check that you've got a sparkly new oil filter and clean oil to confirm that it was done. Also don't forget to have the service book stamped by him/wherever he's getting the work done - that way IF a problem arises at a later date you have proof that he's confirmed that the Service should have been completed.
