...on the way back I nearly got taken out - both by women on roundabouts.
The first instance, I was on the roundabout going straight on when I noticed a car to the left not giving way to me! I looked at the driver (some old bint driving one of those really small korean or jap cars) and she looked at me, straight in the eye. OK I thought she has seen me, but she had a look of complete horror on her face and she just kept on coming out - I mean she made no attempt to either slow down or stop, forcing me to get on the gas and try and dodge past her, if i'd done an emergency stop she would have hit me! She was obviously a complete maniac and it shit me up a bit but collision avoided so I was happy to continue.

About 2 mins after that, when I was exiting a roundabout which is a dual carriage way about to feed a motorway slip lane, I was on the right and a woman driving a taxi was on the left slightly ahead. I went to ovetake but did it cautiously (must have sensed something) and as I moved past her she started to enter my lane!! She made no attempt to indicate, look in her mirror, or to her right - she just started to move out. Luckily she eventually did turn her head to see me right up against her and again, had a look of shock horror on her face then she dived straight back into her original lane.

I've not been riding for long but I now realise you can't trust anyone on the roads and you must be prepared for any eventuality. I also now appreciate just how many total fuckwits there are on the roads.

I imagine everyone has had loads of experiences like these and you've probably heard them all before but I had to vent a bit of frustration. Mad

Poor obs Wink

As you gain experience you'll find things like this happening less and less as you don't let yourself get caught in these situations.

    Assess situation.
Calculate most unbelievable, unlikely, no way ever action that could be taken by other road users.
Plan on them doing that action.

Shit happens pliers, it is astonishing how poor people are spotting bikes. You will get used to it.

You have a button on the left grip which you may find useful - the horn! Fucking blast the cockbags, I like to go for several short blasts, then a long prolonged one after you have their attention.

Other than that, nowt much else you can do, apart from see them earlier, but that may not be as easy as some make out...

Practice, practice, practice.

Agree with whats already been said.TRUST NOBODY.
If you look at every driver as someone who wants to knock you off you`ll stay upright a lot longer coz you`ll always be anticipating the worst scenarios.
Works for me anyway...so far.

If you expect them to do the right thing at the right time....you`re fucked.

And just to add my tuppence, you really do have to think for them, honestly if as you say in your OP that the first driver saw you, then believe that she didn't and ride accordingly.

The second driver: well to be fair I loath those situations and you have to weigh up all the information Taxi drivers = drivers on a mission oblivious to anyone else, you think they'd didn't look, it wouldn't have mattered if they had you don't exist.

I try always to anticipate the stupidity of others, but I find it tiring to think that dumb.

one last point don't be surprised if you find yourself getting squeezed when you're in a driver's blind spot for anymore than a split second.

Glad you're still with us, keep going. Thumbs Up

Well done on avoiding them and not letting them work you up to much, if it had happened to me I think a bit of road rage would have came up Twisted Evil

This happened to me, it was a woman driver, just not a taxi driver. She never even noticed me and blasted down a by-pass, I followed her at full throttle Laughing and she got stuck at some traffic lights. Rolled up along side her and she still hadn't noticed me, tapped on her window and she jumped out of her seat and then rolled her window down, told her to use her fucking eyes because she nearly knocked me off. I timed it well as after my little lecture the lights turned green so I rode in front of her and away Cool

Yeh nearly got taken out by some nobber in a Vectra a few days ago.

He was parked pointing the opposite way on the left hand side (illegal?) and decides to pullout and somehow miss a bright yellow, loud vfr trundling up the road.

Cue waving arm (too fucking annoyed to find the horn) and much countersteering right onto the other side of the road to avoid him. Ah well I learned long ago not to trust drivers to do the right thing but this guy did catch me by surprise.

Not sure I would have made it without counter-steering abilities.

Glad youre okay Thumbs Up

Was riding with the other half on the back and almost got wiped out by a woman in a TT that didn't look turning across me at a set of lights. I was in the bus lane (legally) at the time but that shouldn't have had any effect. I was a little annoyed but let it go - then today I realised that the junction she was turning at is actually a "no right turn" junction... so she in fact was making an illegal manoeuvre!
Part of me wishes I had just bumped her so I could have made her suffer via a nice expensive insurance claim.

Moral of the story - even when you think everything is fine, there's always some idiot out there waiting to spoil your day.

I love people on roundabouts everyone know the double take of terror obviously when they first see you then look again and realise how much ground you have covered and that maybe they shouldn't have pulled out.

Personally I always make a massive deal about things like that, that way they might look twice next time.
