just been quoted £429 for a 2 day (test in the afternoon of day 2) DAS in Romford

This sounds a lot as some people seem to pay ~£500 for a 5 day one

any thoughts?

That does sound a lot to me to be honest.

I paid 750 for 5 days (charged at a base rate of 150 a day including CBT and test) so I think you will be able to find somewhere cheaper.

I will be paying 479 for my 3 day DAS (Hornchurch/Dagenham) Have had 100 knocked off already (as i did my CBT with them) so original price is 579..... Sounds pretty pricey to me, but the the other riding school near me charges 550 for 3 day DAS...

EDIT- I think its pricey as DSA prices have recently risen, and bearing in mind everyone is trying to cram in a test before October changes come into place, and it's the summer also...

Bit OT I know but fourten have you been to the training school and checked out the bike? Confused Without wanting to piss on your chips the standard bikes used for DAS are GS500, ER5 or CB500 and I reckon you're really going to struggle getting enough foot down to hold any of those up............ Sad

the place i did mine in manc charged £99 per day and £60 for test and hour warmup before hand. so three day and test is 3*99 +60 = £357.

I did 1*half day £60 + test £60 so it cost me £120 in total for my test. They assesed you on the day so if you need more they tell you instead of making you book a 3,4 or 5 day course with them knowing your ability.

So all in all i think £500 for a das is taking the piss

I second the speaking to the training school comment. Shires, who I did mine with use ER-5s but because of the rise in the amount of women taking the DAS (not a bad thing in my opinion Thumbs Up Twisted Evil ) they have shaved a seat unit down to enable individuals with shorter legs to flat foot them.

piss on my chips? lol not heard anyone say that before. Laughing No piss tasted in my chips so far Wink

A couple months back i did go to the riding school and rode around on an ER5 on their suggestion when i voiced my concerns about being small. Found it nicer to ride on than my CBR125 Laughing
They also at that time had recently got a second hand 400 import (can't remember for the life of me what it was exactly) but it met minimum requirements for power output, it was a small naked japanese import, they said i could come back and ride around on that when they had put the engine bars on it to see if i was more comfortable on that.

Was quite comfortable stopping and going round bends- although i am concerned about emergency stopping and U-turns, but then again, who isn't?

I did a CBT on a CG- i had to proper hang on one buttock on one of those but managed fine.

The guys there are really nice and really helpful- even showed me how to tighten my drive chain etc. so part of me feels paying the 'extra' is worth it because i know what i'm getting into with these people.

PLUS - sorry for the long post. The thurrock training school (the school nearer me) wouldn't let me do the CBT there because i couldn't get both feet down, whereas the above mentioned place were more than welcoming to me- they clearly stated it's a confidence thing.

grateful for the opinions though!

I wonder what central london prices are for DAS Question

I paid 550 for a 5-day DAS (including CBT) last year - in Wembley. Granted, that was due to a winter discount and the normal price was £700, but that still seems comparitively cheaper than some of the other prices here...

I paid £450 for a 2.5 day DAS in March last year in Gloucester, Tue & Wed DAS, Thursday am polish and test before lunch. This was a 1-to-1 training set-up all costs included. So I'd say if you're getting 1-to-1 training then it's sort of resonable given fuel rises, if not then it's 50% over-priced, and if its not an all inclusive package it may pay to shop around.

The Begin Motorcycling website has some useful links for training schools in your area.

All the best for the test. Thumbs Up

Bloody hell people. Do your cbt for £100. Buy a CG125 for £500. Insure it for £x. Practice yourself for a couple months with help from people on here. Do the theory for £28.50. Do the test for £60. Sell the CG125 for £500. Cancel the insurance policy and get a rebate on the remaining months (or go with a monthly policy in the first place, depending).

Total costs = £188.50 + whatever insurance you have to pay which isn't likely to be much with only a month or two of time under risk + an admin charge. Worst comes to the worst you have to do the test a couple times, but each time is only £60. Cheaper than a day of lessons.

This way, there's a very good chance it'll turn out much cheaper. You can practice in your own time, and have a bike to ride in the meantime. You can pick the day and the test centre that suits you, rather than waiting for a block the training school has for you, and you won't have to lose a week's holiday off from work doing it either.

There's less pressure to fit everything in in only a few days, which makes it much easier overall (for example try learning a u-turn after you've spent a month on the bike getting used to the clutch/back brake; FAR easier). Finally, and probably most importantly, by the time you pass your test you are actually a semi-competent rider. Rather than someone who happened to be able to jump through the right hoops at the right time, one time.

Just my 2 cents.

It's a fair point you make there, but we're all different. I did do a CBT for £100, I did buy a 125 and commute on it for 4 months, I did practice, practice, practice esp. U-turns. And then I decided that as I could, I would take the full bike test and as I didn't want to be limited to 33 bhp I did a DAS. I passed, I part-ex'd my 125 for a 650 rode it for 5 months and then part-ex'd that for a 1000cc v-twin. It all depends where you want to get to, what you want a bike for, and obviously whether it's affordable to you. Penny Coin ++

exactly what Im doing now - Im glad to see im not the only one that thought of this!

Absolutely....Ive been riding my CG125 since I passed my CBT ni March 2008. Passed the theory and now waiting for my practical in July 2008. That will have given me 4 months of experience on the bike BEFORE taking my test.

Another tip is to get hold of 2 good books -the police riders handbook and Haynes "Learn to Ride" - both available from the local library!

The *only* benefit I know of for a DAS or training is that you can get to know the actual test route - but taking a single lesson will give you that. In any case - not all testers will use the same route and a tester will vary there route according to weather conditions!

I would NOT recommend this approach for all riders - Ive been driving for 20 years. If your completely new to the road then you should probably get at least a few lessons.

Good luck.

...and you are also subject to a 2-year restriction period, which you won't have if you do the test via DAS........... Confused
