just curious like and id like your opinions on this please, a while back i was riding up the motorway in the outside lane and there was a car in front of me for about three miles were doing about eighty theres a bit of traffic about and im not that keen on undertaking if i can avoid it, anyhow the car in front pulls right over to the very left of the outside lane leaving a fair gap between him and the outside edge of the carriageway, so i made use of the gap and shot through, just thinking the police might not be too keen to see that sort of thing but is it ok or a bit of a no no.
just wondering if its ok to make progress that way otr is it riding like a dick?
cheers Mike

I would of thought the police would frown upon you overtaking while a car is still in that lane and the fact you were doing 80 anyway so you would of been doing more to overtake? If it was a safe manoeuvre and the speed was similar to the flow of traffic I see no problem.

Riding like a PROPER dick for sure.
You must have a deathwish mate.
Did it occur to you that flashing him might make him move over and let you past???

P.S..never undertake!!!

So you'd rather go in between a car and and the central part rather than undertake? Eh?

Would be seen as very stupid.

I personally just stick to the very left of the motorway doing 90-100. All the traffic is to the right anyways Laughing

I've never been on the motorway without undertaking. I get annoyed by cars just sitting in lane 2 and 3.

As far as I'm aware, it's not illegal if the outside lanes are full?

I undertake lots, but only in motorways. Find it much safer and easier than having to wait behind stupid morons who stick to the far right all the time.

It wasn't riding like a proper dick at all unless you view anything not within the law to be a "proper dick".

Definately not a good move. If the driver wasn't aware of you then they might have pulled back over during your maneavor leaving you no escape route.

Equally blasting past him at speed may cause the other driver to swerve into the path of another vehicle.

Eitherway this is not a move made of win, esecially as you will have had to close on him from your safe braking distance of around 235ft before you begin your pass.

Matter of opinion mate.
If you think overtaking between a car and the central reservation is safe??.. you go for it.....It`s your life.
The gap that you "think" the driver has given you could be all in your head and he might just have a bad road position that could change as you attempt to go past..

What i said wasn`t about the "law"...it was just about common sense and safety.

Undertaking no longer exists as an offence in it's own right, but it can qualify as reckless driving.

Of course if you feel that someone doing 80 on the motorway is daudling then maybe you aren't interested in the legalities of the situation anyway.

It isnt illegal in the way it isnt written down somewhere saying that you shouldnt undertake

It can be classed as dangerous driving/riding though, which is ticketable(is that a word??)

Undertaking on its own wont get you a ticket, it will get you pulled over and lectured, undertaking "dangerously" will get you a ticket./
Depends what the copper classes as dangerous undertakes really. Smile

Don't stress it too much, we all do stupid things from time to time and only think about them afterwards.

It's doing the same stupid thing over and over again that makes you a cock. Thumbs Up

Too true Thumbs Up

Not dick riding (IMO) but not safe to do so in my sense.

Undertaking all the way Mr. Green

I followed a copper who did that several times on the M6 once. He overtook cars in the outside lane by passing between them and the barrier. Of course, each one moved into the middle lane immediately Smile

Hypothetically, it would be better than going between two cars because the barrier will not move into you Razz

But, reckless driving from either of the cars if you went between and your fecked.

Thumbs Up

To be fair, I see people doing this on my motorway commute all the time, on average about twice per journey... And from a following bikers perspective it does look like exactly what you describe, them making room for you to pass...

It was only once I saw someone swerve halfway into lane 2 at 90, whilst 10 feet behind the car in front, almost colliding with a van, that I realised it was just really, really BAD driving Wink

I undertake all the time I have no patiance, IMO you should only be in the outside lane if you are overtaking. I personally wouldn't over take on the outside of someone, but I undertake all the time.

I have a huge attitude problem with people attempting to bully or intimidate me. I know I should be calm and let it go, but lets faced it I am never going to be tranquil enough to become a budist monk.
Smile

A few years ago my misses was overtaking a military convoy on the A43 or 34, I forget which exactly. Anyway we get this young cock come flying up behind us beeping his horn, flashing his lights and generally being an intimidating cock.

So after a half mile or so I had my misses pull in and the lad floors it past. I had not previously felt good about a camera getting someone but when the camera a 100 yrds down the road went off - I've got to say, you cannot buy feelings like that!

If he'd not seen you and pulled back to the right as you were overtaking you'd have been jam.

I prefer to undertake in such circumstances - at least you have some manoeuvring room.
