DAS next week and was at a wedding this weekend when 2 of my girlfriend's friends told me they were selling 600/650CC good starter bikes.

One has an 05 Fazer and one a SV650 (which I think was 2005 but the wine had kicked in by this point Laughing - think the prices will be cheap and similar so which would you go for as a first bike.

I'm erring towards the SV as the Hyosung GT650R I was looking at has the same engine

I am going to be really boring now, As its your first 'BIG BIKE' please go for the Fazer, Please dont take this the wrong way but the SV can bite, the Yam in my opinion is a safer bet for new riders and as always before you do buy one check out the insurance on them both for a new rider

You're talking shit there I'm afraid.

The Fazer is faster and more peaky. Its harder to ride. I don't know anyone who has been 'bitten' by an SV.

Also, to OP; the SV doesn't have the same engine as the Hyosung. It has a similar design. The Hyosung weighs a lot more than the SV - the SV is a much better bike.

I've not ridden a Fazer so I can't comment on that, but I have ridden a mate's SV and found it very easy to ride; very forgiving - good for a novice rider IMO

I'd therefore suggest the SV, providing you're happy to have a twin rather than a 4-cyl (which you obviously are if you were considering the Hyosung).

Nice to have a choice, at least! Thumbs Up

Well, "In my opinion" you're talking shit.

"In my opinion" there is a scale of bikes from Soft cuddly teddy bear to nasty rampaging widowmaker. That scale in my mind goes thus:

CG125, CB500, SV650... ... ... ... ... ...

The SV is a lovely bike, and the only way it can bite you is if you get off a CG125 and dump the clutch at maximum revs in first gear, or you change into first at 70mph and dump the clutch. Pretty much any bike will be the same though, as Big_Ham says.

The SV 650 is a soft cuddly teddy bear of a bike. If you were talking about the SV1000 then I'd kinda understand, but you aren't.

SV is a great first bike for the newly qualified, Fazer (though haven't ridden one) wouldd be similar, though might last you longer as you'll probably out grow the SV sooner.

The best bet is check age, milage, looks etc. and see which you preffer. Either/or would suit you, but try sitting on them and see what's more comfortable. I think the Fazer might be slightly more upright than the SV.

Depends if you get the S or N version of the SV. The N version has high bars, the S version has clip-ons to sits you in more of a crouch.

SV650. I've just come from a YBR, with my SV650S being my 2nd ever bike, and am finding it great Thumbs Up If you want to be more upright, get the non sport version, as the S is quite 'forward'.

Before I passed my DAS, the instructors advised me to get a Fazer or an SV, but they prefered the SV for a starters bike, they rode Fazers which they claimed were a little nippier. I bought a Blandit 650 instead. Realistically, you are in control of the bike so there should be no need to find out which one can 'bite' you.

If you prefer a torquey V-twin, fine. If you prefer the smoother delivery of an IL4, get the Fazer.

This is pretty much the standard list of "Things To Add To An SV650"; no performance-related bullshit. Otherwise stock. Tyres are in good nick, engine seems fine - it may need a new battery after so long sat still in a garage, but I'll take care of that at the MOT. Attached are some pictures; my Mum took them, so they're not really "advert quality". Please don't laugh at the poses, I have a fragile ego.

Let me know if there's anything else you wanna know, or any other photos you want me to take when I'm getting it serviced.
