Golf GTi 2.0, more BHP

I'd really like to increase the BHP just for a little more give without spending a fortune. What bits can i add apart from a exhaust (which i can't stand on cars)
Would an air filter make things feel smoother & add a little more power?

Ah, don't forget to remove the trumpet and 'swiss cheese' the airbox for the low down growl. Must make a 0.5% increase too....

Cheers fellas, i shan't bother then, was hoping i could just get the car a little smoother with a filter. Keith, that sounds like a lot of work. not something i'd like to try.

Keiths right, you wont get any great power gains without serious engine work.
So many people put a loud exhaust on and a k+n filter and then reckon its putting oout more power - when in reality its likely putting out less.

A decent panel filter in the standard air intake system will help.
Induction kits big cone filters are pointless just suck hot air in.
And unless its a MK1 or MK2 GTi or VR6 or R32 then it will never be fast, will just be a heavy cumbersome overpiced hatchback. Sell it and get a cupra R. Rule one of making a fast car, start with a fast car.
Sorry just my opinion on later GTis, especially new ones, there to heavy and barely move under there own power, even when they have been chipped, they get in my way.
Best power gains would be from a chip, if its a turbo version stick an electronic boost controller on, or a decent manual boost controller wit boost gauge, Dont buy a bleed valve

Rip out the seats, for better acceleration, tape up or remove all the aerodynamic imperfections (tape bonnet seals remove aerial etc.) for better top speed.
