Some bad news...

Well not all that bad just yet, but quite upsetting.

My dad may have cancer, i was speaking to my mum last night about him having a go at me for something and she told me to take it easy as he had been a bit ill. He'd gone in for tests about something else, but when they analysed apparently they found something else which has raised concern.
She didn't explain all the details, but they think it may be prostate cancer.
Well, if it is, im thinking they've caught this early, but i have no idea if this makes a difference. She told me not to tell my sisters just yet, but now that i know im not sure what to do.

Any advice on how i should be handling this?

imho, slowy and in a calm manner. In a situation like this it is easy to think of yourself and how your relationship with him is going to change, but remember it's news to him too, and I'll bet he's not taking it as 'well' as you think.

Best of luck with his treatment and recovery. And get yourself checked too.

How scary for you, I dread the day I hear something liek that. Prostate cancer is very common in men and oftain managble and a lot do not die from it, esp is caught early.

(my dad has liver cancer, and has just been taken OFF chemo as it is not workign and making him too ill)

I've just arrived in NZ to make sure I get to see him before it gets too bad.

First off, I suggest you do the same, spend time with him. Prostate cancer can be caught if its early enough. But spend more time with him, all children should.

In fact, I think I will get off this computer and go and watch TV with him.

A freind of mince was diagnosed woth cancer of the prostate approximately 4 years ago and I did a bit of reading up on the subject. If caught early there's a fantastic chance of a full recovery so try not to get too pessimistic just 'cos you've heard the big 'C' word mentioned.

There are a number of ways to treat the cancer, there's a very tiny precis of them HERE.

The one I'm more fmiliar with (mainly 'cos it was what my friend was treated with) is where small rods are placed near the prostate that emit radiation into the body thus treating the cancer from within. All you can do K is support your Dad and Family and try to keep the atmosphere within your family household as normal as possible - I found that sometimes my friend was really forthcoming with what was going on in relation to his treatment and other times he didn't want to talk about it at all . You've gotta be guided by their emotional state of mind and that, by the very nature of what they're going through can be changeable.

Q. Who is likely to be affected by prostate cancer?

A. Each year, nearly 32, 000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in men in the UK. Generally prostate cancer affects men aged over 50, although it has been diagnosed in younger men.

Statistically, a man has approximately double the chance of developing prostate cancer if his father or brother has prostate cancer. However, only a small fraction (less than 10%) of prostate cancer is hereditary.

Race is a factor, with men of Afro-Caribbean extraction having a higher risk. These men more often develop aggressive cancer and at a younger age than Caucasians. The lowest incidence of prostate cancer is seen in the Far East.

As far as I recall K (and I'm doing this from memory so I apologise if the details are slightly sketchy), there's a Protein that's naturally leaked into the Blood Stream from the Prostate - If this Protein level is higher than average then it gives an indication that there might be associated problems and highlights the need for further testing to determine what's causing these readings.

To be fair, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, and if you live to 80 you more likely to have had it then not.

So I wouldn't worry /too/ much about being in the higher risk group, it just means you will be slightly less annoyed by prostate exams ( ... )

As said, if its early and still benign then they are pretty operable/treatable, my grandad had it at 70 ish and hes still going strong post chemo.

That's some shitty news mate, catching it early is good though it's bloody amazing what modern medicine can do. Hope he gets well soon.

A while back I found out that I had a tumor, the first couple of days knocked me for six. After that I started to feel a lot better but family and friends fussing round and asking me how I was feeling all the time pissed me right off. My brother started visiting more often and didn't ask about anything(unless I brought it up) or fuss around me, just spent some time hanging out and it really helped me. What I'm trying to say is just let him know your there if he wants to talk he will.

As already said, prostate cancer is one of the most easily treatable cancers there is, but as you've said, you don't even know it is that yet so there's very little point worrying until you know.

As for getting yourself checked, your not in the risk group so it makes no sense to stress out about having it yourself, that kind of unnecessary suggestion just fuels paranoia in people and doesn't do any good.

My old mans a tough cookie, been a builder since the age 18 and now over 50 he's put in a lot of work. One of the known builders around my area
Thing is, he is a tough one for getting cose to, since we've both got older and i have my own goals now he's not always so appreciative of them, which means i find it hard to think of spending time with him.
