How advisable is not booking a ferry ticket home and instead turning up at Calais and asking for a ticket back? or maybe Holland -> Hull (to save on UK motorway miles).

As said my route is as yet still being planned , and I'll probably do Spain for 5 days and dog leg it back via the South of France N85 Switzerland Germany then Calais maybe Holland ferry back to Hull.

Also this book

yay or nay?

Oh also petrol lamps worth the space or not? , might be doing some rough camping..

Any thoughts?

Cost me £85 for a single last time I did that at Calais, had to wait about four hours for free space on a ferry too. (Tried every ferry operator there, this was cheapest available).

Turning up on a busy summer Sunday doesn't help matters obviously.

If you're going to camp a stove is advisable. If you're only intending to do a little cooking gas will be fine, otherwise petrol is the way to go. Even then, gas stove + canister will take up the same space as a petrol stove.

Booking a ticket home in advance is cheeper than just turning up.
I know the day I want to return so just book the best time, most ferry companies allow 2 our timeslot either way and will if you turn up earlier than that you will get on no problem.
The book is okay I have a previous edition but dont use it much. I plan my stops and look for campsites on the internet before I go, that gives you something to aim for. The route I also plan but am a bit flexable.
The last point on lighting batteries are better as they don't smell when packing. I use a small light that opens as an area light or closes as a torch. Petrol light even when empty will smell and when you pack them away will make everything else smell. I don't carry cooking things as I pick a campsite within walking distance from a town or at least has a resturant. breakfast is an hours drive the next day.

Nah Maurice I mean one of these

https://www.ngunn.net/cyberworld/lamps/coleman-226.jpg

a petrol lamp, I already have a Coleman 442

But thanks for the info anyways I think I shall book in advance and attempt to get there ontime, I mean if it cost me £20 for the ticket last time and £30 to change it I'm still better off booking in advance..

Ahhh.

Tip, LED lights do not attract insects like conventional lamps do, something to do with different light wavelength. This can be good when the insects are large.

You'll get used to checking your shoes for miniature scorpions before putting them on in Southern Spain Wink

That's what I did. I didn't even bother changing dates & times, I just rocked up (on my way out 1.5hrs late, on my way back in 1.5 days late) and I was put on the next train. Thumbs Up

I got a return ticket, fixed time with eurotunnel. £66 rtn.
There is a 2 hour time allowance so a 4 hour window. I live off J12 of the M1 so no problem in making the dept slot and plan my last night stop on the continent within 100 miles of calais so should be no problem in making the return time.
I will write up my tour itinnery later.

When i went to Spain last year i booked an outbound ferry but not the return, ended up paying 50-60 pound in Calais at around midnight on a weekday for Calais->Dover

Yesterday i got back from Amsterdam, I had booked the ferry on monday, found out about the french fisherman/dockworker strike the next day, considered canceling with P+O, but with the threat of a 30 pound cancellation fee (return ticket was 42 pound), and the assurances that there would be sailings, i was delayed by 3-4 hours getting to france (no point waking up at 4am to sit in a carpark), and the return leg was cancelled altogether, they gave me a voucher for the Eurotunnel, which was faster anyway.

I have been looking on the Eurotunnel website and we can get a ticket for the next morning for 11 quid each way... Cheaper, Faster and far more reliable. The ferry is good for getting some sleep before riding, but i'll be using the tunnel from now on Thumbs Up

Just booking my train crossing now...

A single around midday costs around £55.

However, if you book a return with the outward journey again at midday and choose the cheapest return fare it comes to £24. Now how does that work out?!?!

I dont know but 24 pound return is a bargain for a no frills fast crossing (once you get on the massive freight train),

I hear Eurotunnel are reporting profits this year,

This week i are mostly been buying eurotunnel stock Razz
