So what do we think about this and the story about the US asking for British help in spying on other UN member states?

Well a big part of the debate/problem is that people have broken the official secrets act to reveal information about illegal activities carrier out by the government.

Back to the point...

I don't have a problem with us or the yanks spying on the UN. Or any of the other 'good guys' for that matter. We(or rather out intelligence service) need to know what they are saying/doing and not telling us about.

What I do have a problem with is Clare Short telling everybody about this. Although I am slightly concerned about why she knew about this anyway, and why she was allowed to read transcripts of Mr Anan's conversations. Surely this should of been dealt with on a 'need to know' basis; what was her need to know?

The problem is that the purpose of the spying IMO was to gain information to help sway the vote of the non-permanent UN council members. Which is perverting the course of democracy.

I think she was well within her rights to tell everyone that the UK government has committed a serious breach of international law. Seeing as the justification for going to war was to uphold international law. Exclamation Shocked

Penny Coin Penny Coin

Lots of good points, but at the end of the day she has abused her position and betrayed our country.

I do think that she used this for her own personal gain (Edit: referring to Clare Short) , but this does not make what the government did any less illegal.

What the hell has happened to the karma of this thread, has it been affected by the bit that was moved to F+F?

Nor does the legality of the intelligence operations change the fact that Short (and Gun) broke the official secrets act and should be prosecuted. At the very least Clare Short should be immediately removed from government. How can this woman be trusted with anything?

Do you really think that no other nation is spying illegally on us? Do you think that we don't spy on other nations? It happens. Its part of the world, accept it. And whether its right of wrong it does need to be kept secret. Too many peoples lives are at stake for these activities to be made public knowledge.

The problem is that what she did was the only way to (maybe) to stop this happening. Was she supposed to say to Tony Blair, sorry old chap would you mind not breaking international law awfully?

Also, this particular bit of information IMO hasn't put anyone's life in danger. I don't regard her particulary highly because she is doing this for her own ends, however the translator who blew the whistle gets a Thumbs Up from me.

I do agree that many if not most countries do spy illegaly on us, but when we were starting a war based on international law and we are simultaniously breaking international law to influence the non-permanent UN council members it's a different matter.

We weren't breaking international law by spying on the UN ambassador. The UN treaty states that one member should not interfere in the business of another member or the process of the organisation. It doesn't say that you can't watch! The point is, if they did listen in on the UN secretary general's phone conversations, (which they may or may not have)then as long as they did not prevent the messages from reaching their destinations then they were not interfering.

Plus, According to Blunkett, Claire short was never cleared to see priviliged material that may have been pertaining to spying type activities. Some civil servants have speculated that the "transcripts" that Claire Short is supposed to have seen might just be excerpts from the UN website!

She was just falling over herself to get back at Tony, that she didn't confirm her allegaitions as far as I can tell.

Either way she should be punished for her disloyalty.

Such is the wonder of politics..
