I've got a 442 coleman dual fuel stove

erm how do you actually light it? , I've had a couple of goes on the instructions on the side of the stove and other that when it pished petrol everywhere and set itself on fire I've not been able to consistantly light it, anybody care to give me some terribly patronising instructions on how to do this?.

The instructions say open the pump then pump 30 times on the off position (but when it says pump do you cover the airhole on the pump?) . Tighten the pump,

open the valve to light, toss a match into it the second it lights the and pump 30 times, and it SHOULD light...

Problems.... it doesn't light when I toss a match into it, and as before do I need to cover the air hole on the pump thing?.

I want to be able to do this rather than setup camp somewhere and then be figuring out how to light it.

Any thoughts?

google just seems to bring up places where I can buy a coleman dual fuel stove nor do I have any instructions as I bought it a while ago off ebay.

Let me give you a stove lighting tip. I detest pumping a stove any more than necessary.

When I am ready to light my Coleman stove, I take the tank off and pump it up. First I fill it full with the tank sitting horizontal. Don't tip it and it will fill to exactly the optimum level. A full tank of fuel means less pumping.

Next pump it up pretty tight. It is much easier to pump off the stove than attached to it while burning.

OK, after you pump it up, hold the tip of the generator on the center of the main burner. There is a little cup shaped thing there. Open the valve slightly and squirt about ½ teaspoon of gasoline into this cup. Turn off the valve and install the tank/generator assembly in the proper place. Immediately light the burner where you squirted the gas. As the flame begins to die down, slightly open the valve and let some gas through the generator. That gas will burn and heat the generator more, open the valve, add more gas, heat the generator more, etc, etc. You have to add gas, turn the valve off, add gas, turn the valve off several times. As it gets hotter and hotter it will soon be burning with full force.

You can light the stove this way without turning the wire lever into the up position which lets air out of the tank rapidly. This way you can light the stove and burn it for over an hour with only the original pumping. That I like.

Another tip it that when you turn the stove off, remove the tank/generator immediately while it is still spewing vapor gas from the generator tip and put it somewhere safe. When you are ready to light the stove again, go through the above procedure. Doing this prevents the gas vapors from condensing inside the burner tubes when you turn off the stove. When vapor condenses there it takes a long time to burn out. This is the cause of the long lasting orange flame you see on the next morning. Removing the tank prevents this accumulation. Simple but effective.

Hi,

No you don't cover up the hole in the pump, it needs to draw air in thru there to pressurise the fuel tank thus pushing fuel up the fuel line to the burner.

I have a similar stove that uses the same method as yours. I just pump it 20-30 times, turn the fuel lever on (you'll hear it hissing), and light it.
You will get an initial 'Big' flame until the burner and fuel pipe that runs over the burner warm up a bit. After that (a minute at most) you should get a decent 'blue flame'.

If you have the burner on for a while, you will also need to pump up the pressure again from time to time.

ALWAYS make sure that the burner is fully extinguished and cold before releasing the pressure from the fuel tank, or you may get a fright! Wink

I made a couple of mistakes, I didn't equalise the pressure, and I was pumping it wrong me thumb was on the pump hole all the time, twas pretty hilarious though as I set the stove on fire, and grabbed the fire extingusher.

Bah , I think its going in the bin soonish,

I followed the instructions exactly as in the youtube video, I open the cap to equalise the pressure, is pishes all over me hands , I leave it to dry out, and come back,

I equalise the pressure again undoing the filler cap slowly, and pump don't manage more than 15 pumps before it gets too hard, turn on the valve hear no hissing.

Keep pumping to 30 strokes, turn the valve nothing, no hiss no sound at all, toss a match in nothing.

5 attempts later I'm annoyed and its in my junk bike bits pile.

the only way I can get it to light is to pour petrol into the top burner and toss a match in, which tends to set ME on fire as well.

What gets me goat is that it says don't use petrol in them everywhere ..... which completely defeats the point if I'm going to have to carry a bottle of coleman fuel..... bah

I have a 442 and use petrol in it without problems. Perhaps your one is defective?

I'm not sure this one is ahem ' borrowed' off my sister because she 'borrowed' some of my stuff,

I follow the instructions as per the youtube vid, but as said I have problems, I equalise the pressure and get sprayed with petrol...

I equalise it slower , and pump ...till its hard to pump , turn on the valve and hear no hissing sound.... hence tossing a match into it = no flame,

however if I spill petrol into the top flame bowl thing and light it, it starts up fine.

the pump valve or the red valve?

I'm doing exactly what the youtube video says and it won't catch, ie pump , lock , match in valve put to ON, doesn't do a darned thing,

Go and buy a nice, simple, easy to use camping gas stove Mr. Green


The only problem I ever had with my Coleman was the generator tube gumming up. In the end I gave up and went back to my original Primus stove.

Instead of mega-expensive "Coleman Fuel", go to your nearest car paint shop and ask for a tin of "panel wipe" - this is the same as Coleman fuel, my stove runs quite happily on this stuff.

Also, ask someone on
HERE - I seem to remember a page of stove instructions on there somewhere.

That video looks about right.

That proves the pump is working.
The lack of hissing says to me that the generator tube is blocked.
You can clean 'em out - it's a pain in the arse, but it can be done. Carb cleaner is always worth a try. If you do try cleaning out the tube, be careful not to break the very thin wire that runs along the tube. This is actually a needle valve, well it is by the time it reaches the jet at the other end. The stove will run with it missing, but you can't vary the flame, and it will take a good thirty or forty seconds to go out once you turn the red tap off.

Sounds more and more like the generator, or the jet at the end of it, is blocked.

The Coleman is a good stove - I dare say I would still be using mine if I had found out about using panel wipe as a fuel in the first place. They do not like petrol - the additives in petrol gum up the works, so to speak.

Hmm - seeing as I have to carry both paraffin and meths to light my Primus, there's a good chance I may well go back to using my Coleman, and carry a bottle of panel wipe.

Fixed, I undid the generator, petrol squirted out he valve, so I took the thing apart, turned the generator backwards and turned on the valve , nothing came out. stick a pin in the end , and washed it with a very harsh abrasive cleaner,

I'm looking the the pit of the stove where the generator pipe goes into the bottom of the burner and find about 5 cigarette dimps proper cigarette dimps. I clean this out.

I then stuck it on a gas ring for a couple minutes and bright yellow flames came out the ends. Let it cool down , then partially reassembled the stove, it burned very rough and gave off a loud hissing sound with a huge flame.

oops forgot to do the bolt up properly and its onfire now, I put it out with me C02 can, let it cool and partially reassemble it again, I light it and it works, but not as expected, it looks like a gas ring Very Happy but with a yellowy top and its hissing incredibly loudly.

I fry an egg on it sucess! , looks like a new generator (or a spare one) is in order, and some panel striper paint.
