Honda Blackbird

I was bored today so I went down to Midland superbikes to sit on some different machinery.

Now I'm a big bloke so sports bikes don't fit but I sat on a blackbird and found it really comfy. Has anyone owned one and got any comments on them. I know its a Honda so I wouldn't expect too many faults but do they handle OK or are they too much of a barge.

Has anyone got any other recommendations for large sporty type bikes. (large so I'm not too scrunched up )

By the way, the bikes there are very overpriced IMO.

The blackbird is a cracking bike but there are some issues to look out for.

FI model:
Check that there is no mis-fire or something that feels similar and that the FI light goes out once the bike is running. The wiring loom has a connector for diagnostics and it is the low point of the loom. Moisture collects there and corrodes it.

All models:
Also check for vibration, some Blackbirds seem to develop bad vibration, it can be minimised by adjusting the balancer shafts but some have it worse than others.

Don't get me wrong though, they are brilliant bikes and I will probably get another next year.

Very good bikes, watch out for dodgy cct's though.

They can handle if you want them too although do ground out fairly early

Awesome machine for a bit of touring and good for a speed thrill

Very heavy although looses its weight as soon as your moving.

Something to mention about the FI light...

Make sure it comes on when the ignition is on, and *then* goes out when started.

Some crafty people may just remove the bulb if it's constantly on, to hide the problem.

And someting that may b relevant to you; The older carbed models apparently have a flat spot in the middle of the rev range, which the FI models cured.

Having ridden both models I actually prefer the carb version. The flat spot is followed by a real kick up the arse, which is nice cos you wait for that point in the revs and then away you go! The FI version is more linear.

Going back to the FI problem, Noxious is right, the FI light should switch on with ignition and then go out. If you do find that problem though, don't necessarily be put off, knock them down a grand for the misfire and then I'll hardwire the connector for you for £50. It's purely a bad bit of design by Honda.

Noxious is right on the CCTs but they are cheap to replace and it's a 5 minute job.

It sounds like we are giving them a slating but I would have another one tomorrow. The grounding can easily be sorted by fitting a 6mm ride height spacer, although that kind of ruins the centre stand, 4mm is a good compromise.

Get your arse on either Ixxra or Bird and read some of the reviews, a little biased but should give you the info you need.

When i get back from the nurburgring Polarbear pm me on here or mkbikers and you can take mine for a spin. That way you can see what they go like.
So far i like mine, only problem i've had is the cct started rattling but i changed that in 5 minutes. Fuel consumption isnt great but what do you expect? I find under 80mph my wrists take a pounding, but once above that speed the wind takes the weight of your wrists and its very comfortable.

Debben racing do a manual CCT for it to cure the problem. You just need to adjust the tensioner at each service.
