rear thumb brake

Does it give you more confidence than a foot brake, and how long did it take to get used to it?

In my experience is mostly used by stunters, some racers and people with injuries.

In normal road applications I can't see there being any real benefit personally.

Why do you want to use it?

That seems heavily overpriced for what it is.

I can't see a reason for wanting one for road use anyway, whats wrong with the good old foot?

Mick Doohan had one but only when his leg nearly fell off,
I'd hazard a guess it would be ALOT cheaper to make one yourself, just get a standard rear master cylinder , lengthen the hose , and put a snapped brake lever on it. £20 tops.

My own anti lock brake system of my design is very simple , debleed your brakes so the brakes don't have enough power to lock the brakes, sort of like when you get overheated brakes and extreme brake fade like in the city a year back , it was hot and I'd been braking hard, pull the lever to the bar , very little braking force..


Or restrict the lever by putting a steel rod behind the lever so it won't go all the way in and thus doesn't have the power to lock the brakes!.

I think one of the racers at the IOM last year had one so that when the front came up over humps and bridges he could use that to get it down without having to shut off.

I saw a mini featurette on during an episode of BSB where they were looking at what modifications were made to the bikes to allow them to be competitive. The explanation for a thumb brake was that during a corner when the rider is hanging off (and for example they've got their toes down) if they need to apply a bit of rear brake it's pretty difficult/impossible. The thumb brake gives them this flexibility.

And as others said it's very useful for stunters to allow them to check their wheelies while in unusal positions eg. staning on the seat or sat on the tank.

John McGuinness had one on this 130mph TT bike last year. Why don't you send him a mail giving him that tip? Wink

I've read about a few people who have done this, they install a Rekluse clutch freeing up the lever to become a rear brake. Seems like a lot of people love this set up.

I thought that and then thought maybe its so he can keep the balls of his feet on the pegs for a better position but what about changing gear. Think it must just be easier and the front comes up alot in road racing.

Yes...

I'm lying but it might stop you crying.

Why don't you just learn how to use your foot instead of waiting for someone to say they have it so you have an excuse to get it. Just because you don't know how to use your brakes in the first place doesn't mean that using your thumb will suddenly improve your riding skills.

Well thats because it's not a good idea for what you're expecting!! I can say yes if you want me to? then you can waste £230 + £30 for a line and realise how its nothng like what you expected and realise how much you've wasted!!!

Thumb brakes don't have an "anti lock" device!! they just aren't powerful enough to lock the rear brake, I *think* they are used by racers to drift round corners slightly easier as it's not powerful enough to lock the rear up (and skid) but enough to get the back end loose, BUT I DONT KNOW THAT FOR SURE.

Mostly used by disabled people I think... and even so its an expensive an in-effective way of doing things.

I have a handbrake on my bike for stunt riding, but it's a different set up to this and can be done a lot cheaper, and it retains the foot brake as well as being powerful enough to lock the rear wheel with 1 finger.

If you want to bolt on some £300 of useless bling to your bike so you can tell your mates down the pub about it, then by all means go for it....

like sparks says you cant lock the back up with them
just think how much more power you can put through your leg v's your thumb
im disabled and i wouldnt go for one of those
i did have duel brakes on my trike but im in the middle of changing those over to a new duel lever set
its nealy finnished this pic is just after we bolted them on
can be used as brake/brake or clutch/brake

you aint wrong about the price but they have us by the gonads as there's only two places in the uk that sell them
they are nearly finnished my mate who is helping me do them is on holiday this week
just a few adjustments left to do [ they are fully adjustable in all directions ]
and they do look a lot better than in that pic
ill do a thred after if been out to test them next week

I remember inspecting the prototypes for that system and it's a fantastic piece of kit. Very well engineered and an absolute godsend for our disabled brethren. Takes a little time to get used to it, but it's well worth it.
