Sadly the only time there are any decent waves in Britain is during mid-winter. The swell just isn't big enough any other time of year, only get Ann-sized ankle snappers if you're lucky.

Tssk.

You should go to The Bitches in Pembrokeshire. Dunno what it's like on a surfboard, but good levels most of the time. Thumbs Up

EUGH!!! Longboard! Sick

Bad bad bad evil long boards. Only good thing is that they're so stable you can stand up on them, and they catch everything even if it's tiny and lacks any power.

I've got a 5'7" which is ideal for my height (it belonged to Russell Winter when he was a little boy... name dropping, sorry), but it is really hard to catch less than large waves and is very easy to fall off! Being small, it's easier to duck dive and generally handle when you're on it. I used a fat boy's short board in Portugal and caught just about everything, and fell off rarely, but couldn't get under the waves because it was just too boyant Laughing

With a skateboard, you don't need to worry about swells and what way the winds blowing, all that matters is it's not pissing it down! You don't need to trek to the coast either if you live inland, just open you're front door and go skate. It's that simple. If you really don't like all the flippy wippys and spinny winnys that all the kids are doing nowadays, buy a longboard with some really loose trucks and go carve down a hill. After all, skateboarding was invented by californian surfers to practice when there was no waves. Very Happy I love my skateboards like we all love our bikes.

Exactly! When there were no waves! There are awesome waves during the winter in Britain, as good as anywhere. Why waste that on a skateboard, after all the guys and girls who invented skateboarding always went back to surfing because the skateboards just weren't as good fun or as exhilarating as surfing Very Happy

All board sports are a lot of fun. I am blessed with 2 strange talents. The first being able to do pretty much most board sports there are, the other to be able to stick the whole of my little finger up my left nostril! Laughing Mr. Green

I will stand up for all boarders here.

I grew up on wheels weather it was roller skates, roller blades, skateboard, or my personal favourite the SnakeBoard.

And I loved every single one of them, and I was never happy just doing normal skating I had to go aggresive. I built my first Launch ramp when I was 11 or 12 and started to go to the Playstation skatepark at Ladbroke Grove as soon as it opened.

I do like skateboarding but I couldnt Ollie the fecker so it was pretty boring for me, I moved onto snakeboarding when I was doing my GSCE's (so quite a while ago!!) and started on a competition board (completey plastic thing) once I perfected my technique I bought a Stiffy (ooh er!!) board which has wooden footplates and metal trucks, and is used in competitions. I participated in the amatuer class at a competition in London which I was placed 4th in which was excellent as I had only be Snaking for a year.

Can't remember the last time I went to the playstation skate park but it was ages ago. People never used to believe me at school about boarding as I was too trendy to be wearing Baggy shorts, Vans trainers and a ripped up T-Shirt. They didn't even believe me when I fractured both my wrists when a transfer on the Vert at the playstation park went wrong.

Either way I love boarding and would like to get back into it, but Surfing has never really appealed. I watch it on sky sometimes and it seems that all you do is wait for a wave ride it cut back on yourself a couple of times to hit the peak and thats it.

Doesn't beat grinding down a handrail on a set of 15 steps, or doing a handplant at the top of a vert ramp!!

But thats my opinion so dont hate me for it,

hmmmm I must remember to get the board down from the loft tonight.

Mike.

Isn't it funny, I live right next to the Playstation Skate park.

I have fond memories of smoking weed there with a load of crap people. In fact I used to bunk off school and just hang around watching friends skate. I've fallen and bruised my arse many a time when I had a go at trying move forwards. Also I wouldn't exactly say it's in Ladbroke Grove, it's more Portobello Road and nearer to Westbourne Park station than anything.

Yeah your right Susi, I used to get off at Ladbroke Grove tube station and walk the rest of the way.

Bit of a scary area when your 14-15 carrying a £130 board that was sent over from America.

Which is probably why they went Bankrupt as no-one could afford the decent boards!!

Even the shitty competition board was £80 Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Add to that the cost of straps and Bungees.

Mike.

Scary area? Laughing Seriously you must be quite sheltered from Central London, there's far worse places around. The only thing that makes it look a little shifty is the fact that it's skate built right next to the Hammersmith & City line train tracks and is situated under the A40 flyover. Otherwise it's just another typical part of London.
