Hi

This all stems from a press release from the Environmental Transport Association which I have yet to hear of any supporting evidence from (nothing in the budget, etc). The press release has now disappeared from their web site, which suggests they might be trying to hide their mistake.

A 125cc commuter bike currently pays a vehicle excise duty of £15 – the rate in 2009 will more than double to £33.

Andrew Davis, director at the Environmental Transport Association said: “A doubling of tax for motorcycles that produce less than 100g of CO2 per/km makes a nonsense of the revised rates of vehicle excise duty – it appears that motorcycles are subsidising the new zero rate of vehicle excise duty for the lowest-polluting cars. At a time when we are struggling to meet emissions targets and high petrol prices, a case must be made for the small-capacity motorcycles that produce less CO2 than cars and use far less fuel.”


The Environmental Transport Association is a not-for-profit ethical breakdown organisation, providing carbon-neutral breakdown cover and insurance products. As well as encouraging responsible driving to reduce carbon, the ETA campaigns for sustainable transport

...but as said cannot find any confirmation or even denial on a government site.

However, as a side note I notice on the news this morning that some labour MPs aren't happy about the increase in tax for post 2001 vehicles. This based on feedback from the voters and the arrogance of a minister who said they could just sell the cars (which the government own policy have made impossible) and buy a new one (what with, if you can't sell a car to raise money).

Please can we fast forward to 2010 so we can vote out this bunch of idiots. That's not saying the next lot will be any better but at least they might learn from the this lot's mistakes (yeah right, it's politicians were talking about Rolling Eyes )

Somebody misread the budget statements. Rolling Eyes

The Budget was quite specific about bike tax, it's frozen for small bikes next year and increases of £1-2 will apply on bigger classes. Future rises will be in line with inflation, no specific figures given.

The tax next year for bikes in the 150-400cc class will go up to £33. It's currently £32! Someone has misread that as including 125s, it doesn't, they will stay at £15.

Whole petition is a load of cobblers based on an inaccurate assessment of information that is freely available in the public domain, and it kinda makes me sad that so many people have got all worked up and signed it without doing some very basic checks on its accuracy........... makes bikers as a whole look somewhat foolish I fear.........

that depends which inflation figures they use though,

the government uses CPI which does not include housing , tax and loads of other things and has a weighted long term formula which says quality goods say which in 1980s cost £1000 now only cost £500, the forumula is horribly complex,

CPI is used to calculate public sector pay, pensions increases etc,


While RPI is used to calculate the interest on student loans hence you can bet your top dollar they will use RPI,

Or even use REAL inflation based on M4 , 1997 M4 stood at about 550bn M4 is now 1.7 trillion , thus in 10 years £10 is actually now worth only £3.30, this is all hidden by cheapo imported goods which make people feel rich and also supressed by low wages.

So if road tax goes up by inflation

CPI = 3% , RPI 6% , real inflation 22-32%, darn I sound like my dad 2007 a loaf of bread was 99p its now £1.32 for the same brand...

Stick politicians on minimum wage and the inability to claim expenses for their expenditures and I'm sure they'll discover the pains we feel and then they might do something, as of right now they dont care because they have no experiance of the jobs we have, they have no experiance of our income and have no experiance of our communities.

As of right now they dont care cause why should they? They get what they need and want and deep down thats all they care about...driving their jags and other crap that guzzles fuel that they dont pay for, that they dont need to pay tax for...they just put it down as expenses and take home their fat pay packet for sitting in a room and listening to crap they take no action on.

ARGHHHHH, rant over

what you mean fanatics? , .... fanatics in government are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, Blair was one , people may have noticed when he kept talking about god.

The problem with fanatics and making a difference is that making a difference is often terribly misguided in the form of road to hell is paved with good intentions, and they know nowt about the logistics of how economics and societies work.

take for example the recent tax hike on whiskey , increase the tax more revenue right? , nope increase the tax consumption went down and thus tax revenues went down.

As said the problem with fanatics is that they always think they are right no matter what and cannot be convinced otherwise and cannot be bribed like normal people to abandon things which are not good for the country.
