Sorry to sound like a bit of a numpty here guys and gals, but I had a strange quote the other day for insurance.

I had a lower quote than had received elsewhere for fully comp insurance and was interested, so called back to check the small print. Iasked about any loopholes (I fairly straightforward like that me!) where they wouldn't pay out.

This is what got me. If the bike was anywhere within 500 metres of the garaged property and wasn't locked up in said garage, then it wouldn't be insured for theft.

So, I asked, if i'm at the local garage filling up with petrol which is situated about 200 metres up the road from me and I go in to pay for the petrol and it gets nicked from the forecourt, I'm not insured?

No, was the answer... Rolling Eyes

I told him to stuff his insurance up his.. Well, you get the point.

Is this a common loophole in bike insurance? He said it was because 90% of bike theft happens within a certain distance from the property. I get that, but I think it sucks.

The people I went with had a similar clause but it was just while it is on the owners property, which is a bugger if I have to nip into the house to fetch something, but will cover me if I go to my mates house on the way out somewhere or to the garage!

Yours, confused

Adam

I have heard this before, most insurance companies have this so called small print.

The best way round it is to go over the 500 metres limit.

And if you need to pop in doors cos you forgot something, lock the bike back up on your driveway or in the garage if you have one.

Be over protective of your bike at all times.

Never heard that one before. Mine doesn't cover me for theft at home unless the bike is in the garage locked. However if it's nicked from the drive then I'd just say it was in the garage anyway. Smile

Yeah, mine insurance is the same. It's insured everywhere except on my driveway, of course if it was stolen from the driveway my insurance claim would say it was parked on the road! Wink

I get the bit about being over protective about my bike at all times. I aim to be like that anyway. I just thought it was a bit of an arse that I wouldn't be insured just if I wanted to fill the bike up down the road. (Serves me right for having a petrol station down the road I guess!)

The policy I chose is the same as those mentioned, ie, It has to be locked in the garage if its on the property, not covered if just on the driveway. But that kind of makes sense. The 500 metres bit just, well, didn't... Not to me anyway!

I think it might be because they've had people saying "yeah, I parked it on the road outside my drive and it got stolen" instead of saying it is on the drive. There aren't that many places within 500 meters you take the bike. Unless you're well lazy Razz.

And I don't find I "go for petrol". I get petrol when I'm out if I need it. Smile

Let em re-phrase it another way, Razz how about when I'm on the way out on the bike and stop to fill up before I get going at my local. I'd be shafted if the local bike stealing scum were out and about. Which would defeat having insurance in the first place. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, doesn't matter now, have sorted it for something more sensible.

My insurance has something like that in it plus it has to be garaged when at home between 22.00 and 6.00!
which i find daft due to the fact that my insurance is TPO!, lucky i forgot to tell them that i don't keep the bike at my house and i haven't actually got a garage here either Laughing

Insurance, pah! We only got it because we need to have it, face it, if it was not law then I bet a lot of you would rather put the money on new gear/better bike etc.

At the end of the day, most of the time insurance companies find a way to wriggle out of paying out anyway.

very interesting, I was not aware of that. I will be checking all these little loopholes when i get insured very soon! Wouldn't even think to check that for my car insurance, guess no one would pick it up and put it in a van!!

Hi

There are all sorts of nasty clauses in various insurance policies. Charlotte used to work for a company that did motor insurance quotation systems. There was one company who were quite cheap for young drivers of cars. In the small print it stated that a driver under 21 was only covered while accompanied by a qualified driver over 25, even if the driver had a full licence.

All the best

Keith

When did you actually start your DAS? Are you doing it in a short course, if so, when's the big day? Or have I missed something and you've passed without me realising... Wink

When I phoned around for insurance a little while ago one company I don’t remember who it was said that the theft excess would double if the bike was stolen from my house between 20:00 and 06:00 if it was not in the locked garage.
