I have the above tyres on my sv, but they don't feel very confidence inspiring. When I corner, it feels as though one minute I'm upright and the next I get that 6th sense that its going to slip out from under me. Are these good/bad tyres? I know it could well be me just getting used to the new bike, but I've never seen anyone else using these tyres so thought it might be worth asking.

Cheers, Joe

I've used the Metzeler M1 Roadtec's before on a Blade and they were a nice stable tyre. A bit slower to turn in than something like the Diablo but felt more solid as a result. It's worth checking your tyre pressures they really can make a difference to the way a tyre feels, it can only take them to be a couple of psi up or down for them to feel off. You can buy a digital tyre guage from Tesco Express/petrol stations for a couple of quid and they are well worth it if you haven't already got one. Check the pressures every couple of weeks or when you think something feels odd.

As you say though it may just feel funny because it's a new bike with tyres you haven't used before. If you've learnt on a 125 or a school bike they may not have had the best tyres in the world and it could just be a confidence thing with a decent set.

Good luck. Thumbs Up

They're a sports touring tyre. So assuming you've got your tyres up to temperature, it might be the case that they're just slightly squared off if you have that feeling that it's tipping in? It doesn't do anything to help your confidence. I've got the same problem with my BT-020's. My friend on his fazer had 3 sets of touring tyres- Metzeler Z6's, Bridgestone BT-020's and finally Michelin pilot road 2's. He compared the Z6 as not being particularly grippy and almost similar in feel to the BT020 in that it felt that you couldn't get any feedback. Pilot road 2's are in a different league according to him.

Aren't Metzeler and Pirelli ALMOST the same thing (most folk don't know that pirelli own metzeler and it was metzeler's rennsports which evolved into the supercorsas?)

The M1 and the Diablos were very similar tyres, the Metzeler using their patented 0 degree steel belt and the Diablos being the Pirelli evolution. The Z6 as you say is a sports touring tyre and was launched 3 years after the M1s, the M1s and Diablos being more road sport based. The sport touring aspect of the Z6 may make the tyres slower to warm up, but for the average rider I doubt there would be much of a noticable difference especially now the weather has warmed a bit.

Not meaning sound condescending but Titz may have a point about the tyres being a bit squared off. As a new rider you may not be leaning the bike and using the sides of the tyres too much. Using the center/being up right causes the middle strip to wear faster creating a sort of shoulder making it feel like the bike flops over when you do lean.

Joe, how long have you had the bike for, and secondly how long have the tyres been on the bike when the previous owner put them on? These are two questions that I put to sellers on their bikes because often, i'd like to see some fresh or nearly new tyres on bikes that I'm about to buy. It probably won't be helpful that you've passed your test, but i'd say invest in some new tyres (any sports-touring tyre will do), no point wasting it on Pilot Sport 2CT's or diablo's if all you're doing is riding in the weekend - i had dunlop qualifiers previously on my bike and what i made up in feedback, I lost in tyre longevity - as dainesefreak said, any average rider won't notice the difference once the weather warms up, and i have to agree with that. All i can really say is unless you want to fork out on new tyres to gain confidence, the only other suggestion is to adapt your riding style - i tend to hang off more in corners so the bike's more upright. That cliff edge feeling is disconcerting, but might i also suggest softening your suspension too at the rear (if you've got the option to vary your compression damping that is)? After getting stuck up the arse of a gixxer thou and 750 throu corners with squared off tyres, i somehow gained all my confidence back with my bridgestones -it's a psychological thing.

If you pop over to www.sv650.org you will find plenty of SV riders who have them fitted (myself included) and rate them highly. You will also find a few who say they are complete shit.

I discount any opinions on forums about tyres that state either

"they are the best thing ever and everything else is shit",

or

"they are absolutely awful and everything else is better"

I make my judgements on the 'average' opinion of a number of riders, knowing full well that until I get them on my own machine I have no idea whether I will like them or not.

To be honest though, if its black, round and full of the right amount of air its probably fine for most road riders.

Opinions about tyres are like arseholes... Laughing
