Hi there, i was riding through some country lanes earlier and noticed signs with police air support or something similar, what can choppers actually do is it just guiding cars/bikes to your position or can they clock your speed/do you for speeding etc? Never thought about it before but with technology going how it is you never know? Any ideas?

Police aircraft, both helicopters and the Britten Norman Islander aeroplanes that some forces have, (Cheshire for example) have the technology for tracking speed, and dishing out NOIP's.

Apparantly though, there is a specific reference you get on your licence for getting caught by an aircraft, if that's true then I can't deny that it would be a bit cool!! Laughing

It most likely to warn anyone who thinks they can out run plod on the ground that the eye in the sky is watching them.

The little solid white squares you see on the road are speed reference points.

Hmmm bit sneaky sneaky then lol, whats the chance of one actually being up and about? Id imagine the running costs would make it too unfeasible to have one about often?

Some numpties came past me a few years ago on the way out of Bets Y Coed with a copter following them. About 5 miles down the road it had landed and was handing out raffle tickets to each and ever one of them. Mr. Green

All round obs' a must when making progress nowadays. Wink

I predict that in a few years time, you'll be able to buy a gadget on ebay called the 'Copta-Detecta' (or similar) Wink

But honestly if you saw a police helicopter landing infront of you, would you not just turn around and fuck off in the other direction.

I would.

They have fangled inventions on them called video camera's that record moving pictures of registration numbers. video evidence so they have you bang to rights. They never even saw him because they were being sheep and following the leader come what may. He had plenty of time to land , walk across the field and then pull them all over one by one.

Only themselves to blame the nice policeman just waved me past. Thumbs Up

apparently they also do this in California:
https://bp1.blogger.com/_Mvhjidbvdzc/RmekLzQd2oI/AAAAAAAAA6I/Ij6ofiTeKdk/s400/copter.jpg

If you thought you've had enough of speed cameras and police patrol cars, wait till you meet California's Airborne Law Enforcement (ABLE) division. Hoping your Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R will have their Harleys for lunch, is futile. ABLE have a fleet of three EC120B Eurocopters, which are on active duty for about 3,600 hours per year. And according to this Cycle World story, 'the ABLE team is involved in about 700 arrests, 125 vehicle pursuits, the recovery of 50 stolen vehicles and a variety of search-and-rescue missions every year.'

Can a 500-horsepower EC120B Eurocopter, which costs US$1.2 million, keep up with a 160 horsepower Ninja ZX-10R or Yamaha R1? No, the helicopter is actually about 20km/h slower than the bikes, but it'll still catch you because it flies in straight lines, and doesn't have to deal with traffic.

The recommended course of action, if you're being chased by a police helicopter? The ABLE team says, “If you’re getting chased by the police, especially if the agency has a helicopter, give it up. Fleeing is futile. You’re gonna get caught or you’re gonna crash, and then your troubles have only just begun..."

Police quite often have the chopper up above betws a coed and other popular biking roads on special occasions like sunny bank holidays and the like. If you're lucky you can hear it if it's above your valley, don't think they're too high and mighty for you and reserved for high speed chases on television, they can and will book you if you're obviously breaking the speed limit.

Police helicopters are only fast when the weather is good, since they are still the traditional design ie non coaxial rotors which don't care about wind, a bit of wind and they have to slow down a lot, this was my thought for a bank job I thought about once since that town had no police station and the nearest armed response unit was 50 miles away.

But the tactic I remember ZX10R man said was that they hover above areas where it is easy to speed , and book people like this.

They only go to the hotspots where bike riders don't use common sense. The A5 is a prime example also I have seen them in the peak district patrolling the Matlock, Buxton and all round that area. rich pickings for the Police on week ends.

They are hardly going to tell you to ride into an area of restricted airspace to get away from them are they.

All the best

If i had nowhere in particular to be and i noticed one following me for whatever reason i would pull over and wait for them to go. It costs silly money for them to stay hovering and they would run out of fuel before i ran out of patience.

Must admit though, riding to the Cat n Fiddle the other week, just the signs were a bit daunting and made me think twice about opening it up. So i suppose just the threat of their presence has the desired effect. Much harder to keep and eye out for them as opposed to camera vans, radar guns and patrol cars which you are used to looking for all the time. Having to scan the sky too just complicates things.

Only way i can think of to get away from a helicopter is to go near a busy airport i guess, however that's not going to evade the car support they'll have called in ages before you even get there.

yeah, head for an airport. Ideally straight through it like when you go under the runway at Leeds Bradford Cool

Or if you are confident that cop cars won't be round soon - just wait around so they burn all their fuel while you sit there idling.

anywhere near j24 of the m1 is good too, planes fly very low over there as the runway for east mids is spitting distance from there. plenty of little escape routes round there towards notts/derby/loughborough.

Probly not a good idea to run though.
