Ok have just got myself a MX helmet for summer use. But I didn’t realise how loud the wind noise is so who wears ear plugs and what would you recommend? Is it worth buying 200 and use a pair each time I go out or should I opt for reusable plugs which I can just wash (if such things exist)?

There is this company called hearing solutions in Bolton make you a custom set for £34 ,

But disposable ones are cheap as chips you can buy 20 packs of howard lite or something (green ones) for £1 inc postage to your door, or hell you can just use a pair for a week and then toss them.

just look up ear plugs on ebay , though go to a shop and buy a pack of each to see which ones suit you best , I like the orange howard leight ones , the green ones are too small , the day glo yellow ones are too small , and these yellow/pink ones were too big and felt like torpedoes in your ear.

disposible ones are reusable , they just get a bit waxy and scummy which leads you to toss them. Though you can tell the difference between a new set and a used set as they fit tigher and thus block out more sound.

I use ear soft orange ones and they fit me fine. Best bet is to experiment and see which you prefer, everyone's ears are different.

I use mine a few times until they gat a bit manky and then change.

Cheers

Earplugs are an individual choice, depending on your ear size and shape, and how well they work with your helmet.

Try getting a trial pack and then try them to see which ones are the best. There was a really good one from earplugs.gb but I think they may have gone out of business, as their website's been taken down, but I found this in the States, which is really cheap.

I use Max Lites.
Order 200 from Sound distribution for £23 (not inc P&P), lasts me most of the year.
I use one set two time (journey there, journey back) then throw away.

Personally I use Earsoft FX plugs, they offer a single noise reduction (SNR) rating of 39db, which is the "best" on the market. I've bought 200 pairs before off Sound Distribution but ProTec (the linked site) have them cheaper.

EAR Classic ear plugs for me.

I used them when I worked in a warehouse and got 250 pairs off ebay for £30, they are washable about 5 times as well. Thumbs Up

I'll admit that they do seem a little larger than most and this probably explains why they exclude more noise, that and the material they're made of. Whilst on the subject of material, one drawback is that when the ambient temperature rises they become more difficult to insert as the expansion rate speeds up. But, I'm happy to persist and aside from a few duff pairs I've gotten used to them.

Sound Distribution do a sample pack of 4 different types for under a fiver. It has 6 pairs of each type so you should get a good chance to see which works best for you.

I got a custom pair made in 15 mins by Eryri Hearing at the NEC bike show last year. Cost me £40, and they're absolutely fantastic - you can hear your engine, car horns, and a slight bit of traffic noise, but NO wind! Well worth the money as they last 2-3 years (claimed) and you just wash them with hand soap and water.

I've had mine for about 6 months now, I use them every night for bed (anywhere up to 10 hours lol) and they're still absolutely spot on.

~Well recommended.

Just get a mix pack like this

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/28-EAR-PLUGS-7-TYPES-get-the-mix-top-quality-earplugs_W0QQitemZ320258043048QQihZ011QQcategoryZ141065QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I find that these are
the best

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/30-EAR-PLUGS-EARSOFT-FX-These-are-the-best-earplugs_W0QQitemZ370056421156QQihZ024QQcategoryZ141065QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

However they are a bit too good, they really do block most if not all sound.

I also use these

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/30-EAR-PLUGS-MAX-LITE-earplugs-top-in-RIDE-magazine_W0QQitemZ320258043033QQihZ011QQcategoryZ141065QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

These last for ever and are washable, stick a load in tied sock in the wash and they are restored.

They are very comfortable.

I'm a bit sad I have a couple of jars full of both the above types of ear plugs in the garage.

I also sleep with them in.

Has anyone tried the DIY Custom earplugs?

Seems a cheap price as I believe custom plugs start around £100. So do they work in the real world?

Ta Thumbs Up

Hi

I have custom moulded ones. Find that I cannot get on with the foam ones. I seem to have a pretty large outer ear and a small inner ear, and struggle to get the foam ones in place. And even when I get them in place they do not stay there for that long.

Having said that I would say that the foam ones are better for the short time they work for me.

All the best

Keith

I've been wondering about giving these a go:
https://www.diycustomplugs.co.uk/

Someone did spam them on here a while ago and they've got an annoying site, which has put me off, however reckon it's worth £13 or whatever. (Considering the cost of even cheaper other custom ones if you're not near a place that will do the 'fitting'.)
