Hi,

I had my suspension tuned by my local mechanic last week and Im still not happy with the bike.
Is there a decent suspension set up guide out there in plain english?

I`ve seen a couple recommend else where but they all say something different about the same thing, Im not sure where to turn.

Right, the key thing is to set static sag. There is a rough way of doing it here:

www.marjay.co.uk/setup.pdf

However, what you want to do is to set the sag to one third of your total suspension travel at each end of the bike with you sitting on it. This is called 'rider sag' and is different from static sag.

Once you've done this, you need to set the rebound damping as described in the PDF above. Then, in order to set the compression you need to basically set the minimum amount of compression damping that you are comfortable with. You need to set it so that the front end doesn't feel vague, but there isn't too much fork dive under braking. Rear end is a bit harder, but I would say start at around a third of the range and then experiment from there. Once you've got a setting you're happy with, you can then try tweaking the rebound a little.

You've got too much rear compression if the sag is right but the bike is kicking you out of the seat. You've got too little if the bike feels like its wallowing in corners.

Its kinda trial and error here, but it may very well be that your bike shop has got a good baseline setting for compression and rebound damping, and you just need to add the final tweaks.

Also you might want to look here: https://www.sportrider.com/tech/motorcycle_suspension/index.html

Thanks for the info.

The first link (marjay.co.uk) is dead though.

BTW, what do you think of the method shown here for setting the front preload:

Seems pretty much as accurate as you can get...

Right just checked my sag and here is the measurements:

Front Static Sag : 17mm
Front Rider Sag : 37mm

Rear Static Sag : 7mm
Rear Rider Sag : 40mm

Now Im not sure what way to go with my suspension, two guides I have read have two different values for what they should be in.

1. https://www.gostar-racing.com/information/motorcycle_suspension_set-up.htm
2. https://www.marjay.co.uk/setup.pdf

Any ideas or opinions?

Ive also been pointed towards the guides on here :
https://www.feelthetrack.com/tuning_guide.htm

Yet another set of values however.

I'd say if in doubt go with the Go star racing figures, the Bike mag article is just an approximation...
