Hi all,

Its been a long time since i posted on here, but i've finally decided to return to biking.
After 2 years driving cars i went for a test ride on a 2008 hornet last weekend and it just brought it all back to me, how amazing biking is and what ive been missing.
So, i've just brought myself a 2002 Fazer 600 with 6000 miles and full service history for £2000, bargin if you ask me.
Anyway, i have a questions, prob quite a stupid one too. The bike has a scottoiler fitted, i've never seen or used one before.
I looks like the oil is pretty low in it, and i cant for the life of me figure out how to open it, i tried pulling the top off but i dont want to put too much force in because it feels a little delicate.
How exactly do i open it? And what oil does it take?

Thanks all,
Glad to be back Very Happy ,

Neil.

On mine there is a rubber strip on the side, pull this strip off and use the lug hole to fill with oil. If you don't have the original kit then buy a proper scottoiler container of oil as it should come with a pipe and adaptor to help with the filling. If the oil is very low then adjust it to as low as it will go as it is a lot easier to refil rather then having to bleed it.

Welcome back to biking!

If you are referring to the little resevoir thingy then you don't open it, it will have a 'hole' on the side that is covered up with a little rubber thing. Remove the rubber thing and just fill it up (make sure it is turned to prime first though) until the oil goes down the pipe and comes out of the 'injector' at the sprocket, and the pipe is bubble-free.

I always used genuine scottoiler chain oil, if you live in the UK go for the bluey greeny looking stuff, the red stuff is for high temperatures aparently.

You may need to bleed the system if you have air in the tubing.

See my recent post where I fitted one...

Also have a look at the scott oiler website, you can download the maual in pdf format there. You can also buy the genuine oil from there and personally I would suggest using it as it's low fling and is designed to go with the kit (using the correct adaptor to prime the system etc which comes with the oil bottle).

I did all the above for the one that came on my bike and now I wouldn't be without it. Cracking bit of kit.... low maintenance and extends chain life and adjustment periods. Thumbs Up

I need to strip off and clean up the scottoiler that came fitted on the VFR as I think it's dumping too much oil onto the chain. There's oil dripping off the chain under the delivery point and also flinging off onto the sidestand.

I've twiddled with the dial a bit on the top (V.stiff) and it seems to have stemmed the flow, but I've no idea what the delivery rate is right now. I can't even see what number the dial is set to so a removal and re-fit is on the cards.

Its meant to be 2 drips a minutes I think. That seems fast to me though.

If oil is getting sprayed everywhere it can be a sign that the o-rings in your chain have gone, and you need a new chain. Should have see the state of my Dads bike when the chain started going.

Your chain been getting really lose recently?

I only had an hour on the hornet, seemed really smooth. Its really flickable, you wouldn't think to look at it. I noticed that without the faring its really windy over about 90mph.

I just drove the fazer 110mile Notts - oxford. I really like it, seems a great buy. I spent a good hour in triple figures and its still pretty stable and comfy.

by the way, any people here from Oxfordshire ways. Are there any meet ups going on??

Neil.

Chain is looking pretty good and has just had a full service and check so it's just the delivery system I think. Definitely a noticable drop in the oil level in the reservoir since getting it and I've only done about 300 miles or so...

Speak to Scottoiler's customer services/tech helpline - i had a problem with one of mine ages ago (kept dripping for a while even when the engine was off), after a few phonecalls they told me to send it back to them. What i received back was basically a brand new unit as they'd replaced all but one original part.
Oh, it was a completely free service too - all it cost me was the postage to them, they even paid the return postage!!

I'm about 30 minutes from Oxford itself, but currently off-road till I get tax and a rear tyre but I will be sorting out that out and ride outs soon. You on the SE section?

Hey, I'm in Oxford, in fact I'm sat in Seacourt Tower in Botley as i type this!

The only two things that go on round here (that I'm aware of) are Monday nights at Fox's Diner in Berinsfield, usually a good turn out, and the up coming Cassington Bike night. Have a look in the calendar as I set up an event in there for Cassington, on the 30th, that one is definitely worth going to!

Where abouts are you? I'm just in Headington, so if you fancy a ride out some time let me know.
