So my first love, the tango'd CBR125 is gone. Sold for £1200 to East Midlands Superbikes on Alfretton road in Derby. Did something retarded when i arrived there. Got off the bike and put my lid on the pillion sat. Realised i cant take my tank abg off with the steering lock on (i pinches the headstock strap) so unlocked it and twisted the bars straight. The second i did it i realised my mistake and just grimaced in expectation of the *crack*. Embarassed Mad Got a tiyn scratch right at the bottom of my black visor, but its right out the way, so it's ok. Slight damage to th paint on the top of my lid, slightly to the RH side of the vent.

It's an Arai Chaser that cost me £325 Crying or Very sad I dunno if i should replace it or not. Part of me think's i should, because you can't be sure of the damage, but it didn't even chip any paint off, so it couldn't of hit that hard, could it? ( Crying or Very sad ) My gf told me i must replace it, else if i fall off my brains will end up smeared down the road. I'll likely do as she says, coz she has the boobies...

What do you guys reckon? (Always liked the Corsair... Hmm Razz)

It won't have been damaged from falling off the bike. The damage you need to be concerned about (compression of the liner) only occurs when there is something (ie. your head) inside the helmet and it takes an impact. Of course there may be exceptions like if you fired it out of a cannon, but from falling off your pillion seat it will be fine.

If you're still unsure, you can send it back to Arai and they will X-ray it for you. I did the same with my Chaser after a 60mph crash and the integrity of the helmet was completely unaffected despite scuffs over the lid. I gave it to the guys at HG to send away and it took about a week I think.

I did tink about the X-ray thing, but wasn't sure of the details of how i'd go about it. Is it a free service? There's also th problem that i can't go a week without being able to ride my bike Shocked

It was free for me...but it's possible that's because Hein Gericke are nice people and pay for it. Where did you buy it from? You're probably best off asking them, they should be able to take care of it for you.

If you can't face not riding for a week, then I just wouldn't worry about it. It won't be damaged, and it's certainly not worth buying a new lid for. Depends what you value more - a week or total peace of mind.

I bought it from HG Leicester. Now i've got some £££ in my pocket from my old bike, i'll be buying a Bagster tank bag to go with the tank cover, so will ask about my lid when i go in there.

I'm quite friendly with the staff, and the guy that sold me the lid says he remembers me from the very first time i went in there Thumbs Up Smile

Hope the gf doesn't go on about it too much. Might have to punch her in the tits? Laughing

Yeah, punch her in the tits and then point out how vulnerable she is without a pristine Arai bra with fibreglass construction.

Smoke and mirrors, see.

Contact Phoenixw (google it) and they can check your helmet over for the cost of postage which is about £15-20. Chances are the helmnet is fine though.

as you say you brought it from HG what you need to do is take it back to them with the blue arai service card (presuming they filled one out for you) and say that you have dropped it and would like for phoenix to give it the once over, There will be no charge for pheonix to look at it as that is part of the arai customer services. They may want to charge you for postage to phoenix though which is understandable.

when pheonix recieve it they will not X Ray it as A) X rays are verry expensive and B) will show them absolutuly nothing as the outer shell is going to be denser than the liner any way.

but what they will do is strip the helmet down to the inner lining, and compare certain properties (used to know them but forgot now Sad ) of the non suspected crash and the suspected crash areas.

Personaly mate i would get it done ASAP as helemts have been writen off by phoenix becuase the owner had been carrying it by the chin bar for 3 years and some of the absorbing material had been worn out, so a fall from your bike could do some sort of damage.

and think about it if the helmet is not capable of withstanding a fall from the bike how will it protect you if you fall off at a stand still?

in the mean time buy yourself an RX7 (or and AGV S4 if you want to be 2 stars safer Rolling Eyes ) get the chaser checked out and if it comes back all clear give it to the misses Wink

If its knackered after dropping a few feet off your bike what chance would you have in a 30 mph accident!

Touch up the scratch with felt pen and keep on riding. Very Happy

A helmet is designed to be a one shot item, get it checked out to make sure it hasn't shot its bolt.

Didn't you have another lid somewhere Nox?

It should be fine as previously said a helmet onl really gets damaged when they're is lot more momentum in the fall, i.e. weight in it.

Nope, no spare lid.

Went down to HG today to ask them abou getting it checked out (and to have a good chinwag with some fellow bikes in the sunshine Smile)

I showed it to them and they said straight away "Is that it? it'll be fine". Apparently they've had quite a few people with really bashed up lids send them off, and they come back with a clean bill of health!

I already knew this really, but it's just reassuring to hear it from someone who deals with that sort of hing on a regular basis. Thanks for all the comments guys Thumbs Up .

on your head be it - literally lol

as i mentioned before i have seen helmets be writen off because of the way the owner was holding it, and as HG mentioned some have been spared which are totaly battered, it all depends but i personaly think you should have it checked over, but its your choice at the end of the day.

and a helmet is designed to absorb impact and deform the EPS liner, so a slow impact will deform a small amount of the liner and a big impact will deform a large ammount of liner, either way the properties of that liner can not be replaced and it may be that small ammount you need if you come off again

But its your call Thumbs Up

How could dropping a helmet deform the EPS liner? There's no impact to absorb as there is no head inside the helmet to get propelled into the liner upon impact. The liner absorbs the impact of the head upon the shell, not the impact of the shell upon an external force.

The liner isn't going to be affected because the shell took a bit of a knock. Helmets that have deformed over years from being held incorrectly over the years are a different matter because pressure is being exerted on the inside of the helmet.

so your saying i could take a cricket bat to you stood still with a helmet on your head and your helemt would take minimal damage as your head is not asserting a great ammount of pressure on the lining? or put it on the floor and hit it and will suffer no damage?

so if energy hitting the outside is not absorbed then it would need to be deflected? so why doesn't a helmet bounce 3 feet into the air and crack? because the energy is absorbed into some of the EPS lining, it works from both directions

No, because if he had the helmet on his head then it would affect the inner lining. The OP did not have his helmet on his head when he dropped it, hence why the inner lining will probably be fine.

If you hit an empty helmet hard enough it probably would fly through the air, but they are quite heavy for that kind of thing.

It's not really going around in circles, it all boils down to you not understanding that if there is nothing inside the helmet, the force will not be transmitted to the inner lining. Simple as that.

If it was hit REALLY hard then it may be possible to break through the shell and damage the lining from the outside, but since there is barely a scratch on it I think it's safe to say that's not the case Wink .

Noxious posted on here to ask for opinions, I'm just giving him mine and telling him why I think yours is incorrect. No need to get your knickers in a twist.

ok so why does arai say this? Helmets exist for one reason alone - to reduce the amount of impact energy transmitted to the head in the event of an accident. The outer shell of the helmet absorbs the initial impact, dissipating it through the inner shell which then absorbs a great deal of both energy and inertia, effectively cushioning the brains decceleration.
www.whayarai.co.uk

why have i been trained by arai technicians to understand this and why do a great number of people take great care with there helmet and not just trow it on the floor, why in another post are people discussing getting a discount of a display helmet as it may have been dropped in store, why are people wary of buying helmet from on line shops incase they are damaged in transport, why do they come from japan with bubble wrap in the box if all this is pointless because they wont be damaged unless there is a head inside them?

I agree Nix...
It's like saying an eggshell won't break if you drop it cause there isn't any egg in it.
Helmets are designed to take ONE impact to a certain area (highly improbable to experience multiple significant IMPACTS (not abrasions) on the same spot of the head.) This is different to car helmets because due to being strapped in the seat it's more probable that you hit your head several times in the same spot.
A drop might not break you helmet open, and there might be no visible damage, but the internal structure (fibres in this case) will break almost definately. If it's a small drop then very few break, but the helmet has been weakened in that spot.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the cheap plastic helmets are much less susceptible to damage from a small drop as they don't have fibres that break. However they are less impact resistant in a crash.

Don't get me wrong. I've dropped mine easily 5-10 times and I'm not replacing it! If I was a millionaire then sure, but I'm 18, so no. Depends if you feel safe or not. If it affects your confidence then change it cause that would really suck

The inner liner cushions your head in an impact, decelerating it as much as possible which is obviously preferable to a sudden stop. The force of your head upon the liner when you hit your head is what damages the liner, nothing else.
Tape some polystyrene to a piece of balsa wood or something else solid, secure it so that the polystyrene is not in contact with anything except the piece of wood, and then hit the balsa wood hard. Does anything happen to the polystyrene? No. Would you expect it to? Of course not - that would be absurd. Why then would the polystyrene inside your helmet magically crumple because you attacked the outer shell of the helmet?
Take the same polystyrene/wood contraption, put it on your desk polystyrene side down, and then hit it. What happens then? You're forcing the wood into the desk and the polystyrene in the middle absorbs the impact. Exactly the same principle with your helmet.

Paranoid people buy more helmets...far be it for a helmet company to discourage this.

Things don't always have to break to dissipate energy.

The lid did bounce a good couple of inches off the floor when it dropped, and then proceeded to roll away. Exclamation

ahh but the bit you've bold-ed doesnt apply here, because of the sentance before it: "..transmitted to the head in the event of an accident." if he hit it on the ground with the same force as he did, with his head inside it it may well of deformed the inner layer, but because there was no momentum acting from the other side of the inner, theres not likely to be much damage to it.
