Was running a set of Pirelli Diablo III H's. Running a 160 rear as well.
I always felt confidence in them over the Bridgestones I had on previously.
https://fstg.motosport.com/motographics/images/products/Metric/07tires/PR_DiabloCorsa3Pair.jpg

I lost the front end on a few occasions but as I WONT give it until the tyres a very warm now, When I roll off, I always manage to re-gain grip. Smile

They did wear quite well too, Lasted ages, Probably got around 5000 miles out of the rear! But recently ive been taking Roxanne out on it alot and its worn out pretty damn fast.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/binge/15062008593.jpg

Today I fitted a set of Pirelli SuperCorsa ZR rated tyres.
Was a little dubious at first, being Z rated tyres, Having problems with my 400 not being able to warm them up like a set of H rated tyres.
But I fitted them anyway, And after a bit of riding, I was surprised how quickly they warmed up, And how hot they actually got!
Ampules of confidence in them, Was chucking the bike around corners, Then got the feeling the bike was saying "Pah, is that all you've got"! Laughing
Superb tyres.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/binge/15062008594.jpg

Strange "Chicken strip" on the front there though. But the back is run right off the edge of the tyre. Confused
Front must have a steeper profile or something, Narrow contact patch, Not sure.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/binge/15062008596.jpg

Then me and my girlfriend went for a ride up to the grain road.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/binge/15062008610.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/binge/15062008617.jpg

And then I had a little bit of fun, Although I only got a few wheelies out of it before the clutch gave up the ghost. Its alright when it cools down. Think I need to clean it up, and stick some fresh oil in her.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/binge/15062008619.jpg

So if you have a 400 and are afraid of putting Z's on because its only a 400, then dont let it bother you. Im sure the 600s run on Z's anyway.

I have always had a strip on the front of all my bikes, I have nothing on the rear but usually about 5mm untouched on the front

I always have a small strip on the front, even with nothing on the rear.

I was once told the front chicken strip is to do with how quickly you turn in. But I don't know.

I seem to recall front:rear weight distribution coming into the equation a little too.

As does tyre profile. a 120/60 is easier to get to the edge of the tyre than a 120/70 (yet a 70 has a larger leant-over footprint and thus better grip).

How good are those tyres in the rain?

Surprised your still running stock pegs.

Same here, Not sure why, think my weight ratio needs setting up. Although its quite a safe feeling knowing I cant run out of tyre up front. Low sides aren't nice.

5'5, Size 6. Not quite fat. Wink

And yea, really need to go for a hoon although ebbsfleet is sucky now.

And fanny on the back of the bike is always made of win, My GF is only light so doesn't really affect the handling too much either! Smile

In fairness, I don't really counter steer that much. Confused
I dont want to push my luck since my low side last year, Had a bit of a confidence knock, And although im pulling off wheelies, Leaning the bike right over takes a bit more bottle IMO.

Went out for a blast tonight, REALLY happy with myself, Went up Laker road, It was quite-ish, Started doing wheelies, Then got onto the stand ups, And before I knew it, I was actually up at balance point, Slowing the wheelies down to around 10k RPM/30mph.
Managed to hold them up for 3 lamp post lengths, So whats that? 300ft?

It was really dark though, So a bit iffy.
I think my new "up and back" jack up plates have something to do with it. My Granddad ran me a set up on his milling machine. Back 1" and up 2". OMG it makes it a different bike! Smile

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/binge/16062008626.jpg

Then I though id see how the old 400 stood up against some fast cars.

Up my arse was a 1.8VVC metro.
Followed by the following (no order).
2.0 16v 200bhp~ Mk3 Golf
Toyota MR2 (something or other, supposedly a fast car)
A red top powered Corsa
Clio Cup (172?)

Problem is, We came off the corner up the top, I was about half way back, And then they dont like wait, They just boot it as soon as they are out of the corner, So I had to catch up with the Metro (which was at the front).

Thought the bike did well, I was expecting it to be faster, hmm, I suppose it is only an old 55bhp 400.

How does one turn a bike without counter steering then?

Are you still counter steering if you turn in very slowly and gradually lean more?

The only way to start a turn at high speed is to counter steer, whether you are conscious of it or not. Wink

The no BS bike from Keith Code shows what I mean.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nRUeEkS644

Thumbs Up

It has an extra fixed set of bars(by fixed I mean fixed to the frame, so they cannot turn the bike) with a throttle on them above the normal set attached to the forks.

If they are Scrubs which they look like, they wont last more than 1000 miles, although that was on my GSXR750, they are great tyres but tend not to be so good in the winter, you cant get heat in them on a commute.

Front chicken strips are way more difficult to wear down on the road, i only do it on the track, to do it on the road, youd have to be leaning far over, with a fair bit of counter steer and probably on the power aswell.
Make sure you have crash protection if you attempt it Razz

Difficult? Got pretty close on a few bikes I've owned and I've never visited a track. I agree 120/70s take some lean action though, but hero bobs are there for grinding.

I still didn't believe you and thought if you were turning in slowly and leaning gently you wouldn't be counter steering, until I rode home from the bank before.

I took my left hand off the handle bar, put the palm of my right hand on the back of the throttle grip and pulled it gently and I went to the left Crying or Very sad Laughing

£20 a month for super sticky tyres beats £150 a season for (new) harder compound tyres. Smile

Errrrm being close isnt the same many people have 1mm on the rear, and call that close, my front on the RSVR has about 1mm which is close, but its not it, to graft them all off i would have to be doing something idiotic or on track.i .
I also came close to winning the lottery last week, but i didnt get the last 3 numbers.

How good are you at percentages?

1mm out of 120 is pretty close in my opinion. (Like utilising 98.3% of a tyre's available tread, for instance.)

Close doesnt mean you have done it though does it ?, i dont think ive honestly done it on the road before, and ive done a lot of road mileage, hit the pegs down on various bikes but it doesnt matter, its down to counter steering which you do alot more aggresivly on the track, i cant physically ride on the road like i do on track.

A couple of millimeters close to the edge of the front tyre? Sure I have, it's not hard to do, just requires a bit of confidence in the front end.

So you have no chicken strips on you're front tyre ?

You must be a feking quick rider, or you hang off the wrong way when going round a bend !.
