 |
|
A bit of a touring type question but also relates partially to rain suits and keeping cool. In Spain I am told that the thing that kills you is the heat , namely the sun. A couple years back I remember roasting in the UK too.
So would this work? ,
Originally I thought of buying a cheapo length of Lame'
https://www.distinctivefabric.com/images/products/color/jpg/lame1_silver.jpg
It contains metalic fibres so that it would reflect the sun light, and keep me cooler than black leathers as Lame' is semi breathable.
Then I thought of my last tour when I bought along a roll of mylar ...
https://www.mylarstoreonline.com/images/EclipseMylar4mil00.jpg
So if I were to make a rain suit out of mylar the reflective plastic coated foil which balloons and emergency blankets are made of, would this keep me cool? , in that it would reflect nigh 100% of the sun light and arc flash everybody on the road, argh my eyes other drivers will think... Though I only intend to make a suit that goes up to my elbows to prevent giving MYSELF arc flash from the reflectiveness.
But the problem is mylar is 100% non breathable, which means I can use it to double up as a rain suit a proper 100% protective rainsuit (I've used mylar to make water bags). And I need to cross Northern France where the weather is utterly horrible.
Is this a good idea or a bad idea?.
Or would police tend to frown on me being the silver surfer and arc flashing everybody from here to Cadiz?
Any thoughts?

Having just rode across the Med I only found the heat a problem in the cities, unless you plan on doing a lot of city riding than your speed should more than compensate for the extra heat? ____________________ My Bikes: Piaggio NRG| Aprilia RS 125| Suzuki GSX-R 600|Yamaha Fazer Ducati 848

Sounds intersting. However if you go out on a bike looking suspiciously like a jacket potato from the waste down, people from milan to basingstoke will point and laugh because you'll look a twat

On a more serious note being a fat bugger I sweat my cobs off in the heat so I got one of these:
https://londonbikers.com/news/7008/weise-air-spin-waterproof-vented-jacket-pants
Weise Air Spin Jackets. Fully fitted armour (removable waterproff liner) lots of strong mesh venting.
If you were worried about still being too hot try an wet long sleeve T shirt underneath, the evaporation will cool you down more. For me it fits teh bill as you will need some crash protection, and to be mostly covered up to prevent sunburn. They do trousers too.

Oddly enough I have some experience with this albeit not on a motor cycle. Bare with me...
A crowd of us were invited to a fancy dress party where the theme was aliens and space men, there was an assortment of people dressed up in sheets with bug eyes etc. I got a disposable painter's boiler suit and a couple of silver survival blankets, I glued the latter on to the former, (printed off USA flags and NASA logos and stuck them on too.)
I can reveal; after wearing my space suit for about 2 hours in fairly average room temperatures, I was drenched in sweat, feeling similar symptons to heat stroke and generally not enjoying myself.
It was extremely uncomfortable.

On a similar tack Hein Gericke do the Air jacket and trousers.
I think mine may be the older style but it's damn good
Has lots of zips and vents and takes armour - recommend the HG bendy stuff.
Isn't waterproof - but then doesn't pretend to be either so that's ok.
