Ive been riding a rip back and go moped for around 7 months now, and want to learn gears before i take my A2 in November.

Ideally, i want a motocross/enduro style bike, 50cc sadly as im still 16, because they look a bit more fun than a moped for the summer Smile Smile

Can anyone recommend a bike from personal experience or just general knowledge? Anything would be apprieciated.

My budget is around 700 quid, my mum will pay the insurance, and I will sell my moped to contribute to the cost. I already have a lid(obviously), boots and gloves, Textile jacket and trousers - anything else i need for a crosser?

Thanks Smile J.B

suzuki ts50x Thumbs Up was my first bike and loved it, bullet proof so handy for when you dont know what your doing, mine was restricted to 30mph but ive heard that with the right bits it can be made to do a true 55mph which is as fast as your likely to get out of any 50cc.

Other more modern looking bikes that might be worth a look are things like the Derbi senda, aprilia RX50, motor hispania Furia (i think thats the name).

to be honest the list is endless just keep an eye out on ebay and bike trader, oh and stay away from the chinese crap Laughing

Cheers mate Smile I aint someone who beleives they can get 80mph out of a 50, dont worry Laughing

The derbi senda has caught my eye on eBank, a couple of em are going all the time, the only problem being some look a bit rough around the edges, and I need a bit of a price guide regarding year etc.

Thanks

that makes a change Thumbs Up

To be honest they're all pretty similar and im assuming as soon as you reach 17 you'll be after a 125 or bigger so i wouldnt be too worried about looks, bareing in mind you'll be keeping it for 6 months maximum id just go for whatever is at a reasonable price.

Good idea with getting the pracitice in on gears, made life so much easier already having the practice when i came to do my A2 Thumbs Up

I'm in a similar position mate. I've had my Ped since November and want to learn gears before an A2 test in November. I want an RS 50 though.

There is loads out there mostly all running similar engines. but differing styling by brand as you'd expect for the Dirtbike kind of look theres.

Yamaha DT50
Suzuki ts50
Motorhispania furia
Peugeot XPS/Peugeot XP6
Gilera GSM
Derbi senda
Motorhispania Ryz

Thats all that comes to mind atm.
but keep scouting and youll find one cheap as chips!

Being honest, I wouldn't bother. It's a lot of hassle and expense to change bikes for just a few months, just to learn gears. You've got the main part of the road experience (presumable seeing as you've been riding for 7 months), it hardly seems worth it.

To me it was

A) by geared 50, spend lots of money, look naff (no offence, but 50's in my area are populated by the spawn of inbreds) and not really get anywhere quicker than public transport

B) wait and save and do a2 + get real bike

It worked out to be about £250 more to do B) with an entire year to save.

Obviously you have probably considered this.

If I was you I'd go for an old bike which has done lots of miles, and had lots of tlc. Generally will have had lots of noobs screwing it over and survived, so you probably won't be able to kill it Laughing

Or new bikes, no fairings is best really. Hold their value better if you do get a little scrapeage on it.
