When riding my geared 50cc Smile I get a problem, quite annoying.

When changing from 5th to 6th sometimes it will go into a false neutral. I pull clutch in again and go up and it goes into 6th ok.

Sometimes it doesn't happen. I think it may have something t do with how far I pull the clutch in when I change. Someone else rode it and it does it every time with him.

You just have to make sure that you knock it into the gear with your foot. Obviously from 5th to 6th you're not clicking it far enough.

Sometimes poor chain tension can cause false neutrals, so check it.

Got the same engine and box on my bike and i had these problems,
Back when i did the cbt i got stressed about it, but then got taught how to do it properly, you need to be giving firm kickups slowly and getting feedback from the lever.

Nothing to do with how far clutch is in, as long as your past the bite it should work,
but if your convinved try your scenario but clutch all the way in and change see if it goes in better.

Mine occasionally pops out of gear but hardly ever, just practise i thinks, as i dont ever have the problem anymore.

Have you tried some test runs with clutch fully in see if its any smoother in going in,
its really all practise, i can go through the box for a whole ride now and not hit a false, used to hit them all the time in 1st month or two. another reason if i remember i was getting them was changing too quick like doing the roll throtle clutch in change up and drop clutch and on throttle all within about 2 seconds flat.

Try doing it slower see if it goes better.
Post back if stillhaving problems if so, ill take a video of how im doing it so you can see what speed im doing to avoid them.

2 seconds Shocked That's a long gear change. What happens if you're overtaking a a car for example. My slow gear changes only last about a second. If I'm going for it it's pretty much instant.

I've never hit any false neutrals but I do have an issue with my gearbox that if I hit it down to hard from 3rd it skips 2nd and goes into neutral. I'm very gentile with my gear changes and I've never hit a false neutral.

Allymoss, try it from a different approach and just positively clicking it in but not really hard Thumbs Up

Then you must be dropping your clutch out.
If your doing it all within a second.
which shags your clutch out and not sure if it damages the box in time, all good for getting faster and that but dont think it outweighs the disadvantages.

Have you timed how long 2 seconds is?

It probably does wear the clutch out quicker over a long period of time but I don't think it's going to do instant damage.

Whats with using clutch for upward changes at top end of box. Laughing

If your taking 2 secs on a 50 to change up gear, you will need to drop straight back down as you will have lost to much forward speed. Wink

Even on a non synco wagon gearbox it don't take 2 secs to change gear and thats included the double de-clutch....

I've not tried clutchless gear changes, I'm scared of hearing a grinding noise if I do it wrong.

The clutch is there to be used Wink

I rarely use the clutch when changing up gears as it seems smoother gear change and i lose hardly any power as i can do it so quick. I do double the clutch when changing down though but going up gears i find it alot easier skipping out the whole clutch bit Very Happy

I occasionally hit a false and rather noisy neutral between 5th and 6th on my NC29.
but thats probably something that can be expected of a 1991 motorbike. Laughing

Checked your oil?

its still doing it but now I make sure i click it twice just incase.

Anyho, my bikes off the road now as I was rolling down a hill, my chain came off. The split link fell out. I found it, bent it back and managed to find the little figure of 8 thing and wedge it on.

15mph all the way home Very Happy

when I hit the false neutral, it goes to about 12,000 rpm which is 2000 over my red line so I don't like it! On a 50, you have to change quickly otherwise you will not be able to keep speed up.

2 seconds is ages btw. Mines probably about 1/2 second for a quick shift and 1 second for a relaxed shift.

Are you sure they're 2 seconds as you'd be off the throttle for absolutely ages?

Yeah. My point is, clutch in a change takes about half a second.

Why would I want to try it, it's slow Laughing

my chain tension was perfect. I have checked it many times in the last week due to change of front sprocket and thats not the cause because it was doing false neutrals before that.

Anyway, how would the tension cause a false neutral.

I would only do a 2 second shift if I was rolling or something but when accelerating as in changing up gears, then it wastes time waiting for my revs to build up again.
If it works, then it works but a 1/2 second change shouldnt damage your engine unless its not smooth.

Err, I think he meant that perhaps your chain was slack, seeing as it came off as you went down a hill!!! Neutral

it didnt come off because it was slack.
when i was at the bottom of the hill after rolling down, I revved and there was no power to the wheels. The split link had come out. The chain hadn't fallen off on its own, just the split link came unclipped and I managed to limp home after 20 minutes looking for it.
