Just thought id share some cheap camping gear with you, im planning on doing some touring on the bike, possibly to scotland and then to europe... Thumbs Up

First of all, and the most obvious is the tent.. now I vaguely remembered getting p!ssed one night and buying a tent from ASDA and setting it up randomly in Basildon.. (so it must of been simple to set up!) unfortunately it got destroyed by a large gang of chavs (i found the smoldered remains the next day as i had to ditch it after 10 of them decided to jump on it..) Middle Finger

Anyway, at that time these were £10, no guy ropes to trip over, just four pegs at each of the corners to hold it down..

https://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll154/southeastbikers/DSCF0650.jpg

Now, it looks TINY, if your over 6ft i wouldn't recommend it, im about 5ft11 and i just about push it out Wink

But like the tardis, its bigger on the inside.. and for £7 you cant go wrong..

https://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll154/southeastbikers/DSCF0651.jpg

Thats a double airbed (INTEX) in there... pumped up with a electric pump bought from ASDA too that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket (bought a motorcycle ready one from Ebay a while ago).

Also there is a inflatable pillow which matches the airbed perfect..

https://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll154/southeastbikers/DSCF0652.jpg

The pillow was a bargain from Poundland, which sell camping gear now (yes.. its all a pound! Laughing )

As well as that i bought a rubber mallet from them.. i already had the sleeping bag... but again ASDA sell them pretty cheap (£8 i think). Very Happy

Now, i was a bit 'dubious' about four pegs keeping me to the ground, so i thought id test it, so i pumped up the airbed, blew the pillow up.. and camped in my garden (where its currently set up) in the high winds the other night..

And it didnt move an inch, which i cant say for my neighbours gazebo, which i found a 3am threatening to smash one of our skylights.. Laughing

Best bit is it does all come together and pack neatly into a small bag, which i bungie to the top of my hard panniers..

https://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll154/southeastbikers/DSCF0653.jpg

Heres my weapon of choice as well..Very Happy

Its a 1979 Honda CB750kz with ancient original honda hard panniers and a givi topbox Smile

Anyway, hope this post helps some of you hoping to go touring..

Have you tried it in the wet?

I got a cheap one from tesco (£20 bigger one with fly sheet). Even in the dry, there was bad condensation on the inside in the morning.

Ended up buying a new one when I took it to Glastonbury a few years ago.

Yes i have fella, with the glorius wind, came the glorius rain which is what i was hoping for to test it.

I expected a lot worse from a cheap tent but the condensation was minimal..Very Happy I checked the walls inside when the rain stopped for a bit and they were fine.. the entries a bit comical.. open up.. dive in twist round, shut tent.. huddle under sleeping bag shivering.. Laughing

you know the drill!! Wink gotta love camping! Very Happy

Was that spending the night in it, or just leaving it as is?

Anyway, will be interesting to hear a report when it's been 'used in anger' Smile.

No i actually spent the night in the tent so i knew if it leaked... my feet/head were at times touching the sides and wasnt wet.. soo it was pretty good.. ill be trying a few more nights before packing it away again and planning a route.

Dont you just take pop-up festival tents to Glastonbury?

used in anger...? you mean how easily it rips etc? Confused probably easily, but it survived the elements all right..

Tsk hotels have problems:

They lock you into a certain route, if you book, which means you can miss out of routes off the beaten track , which I found many.

If you don't book it locks you into hotel running , before they get filled up which leads to riding wayy too fast , and riding round looking for alternative hotels when they are full.

Plus if you are on your own hotels get very expensive after a few nights, but if you have the money than why not...

No it isn't. Guy ropes are there for a reason and you either haven't put them out properly, put them far enough from the tent or put them all out.

If you'd been camping at the rally I was at two weekends ago, your tent would have been a flattened pile of splintered fibreglass and ripped canvas.

Cheap tents are a great idea until it starts getting windy, then you realise why expensive tents have metal poles. Even these are useless if you don't put them up properly.

I ought to get my photies back from that rally tonight. I may do a tutorial on how to errect a tent properly because I spent the best part of an hour going round the field adjusting peoples guy ropes and pegging their tents out propery for them so they didn't land up in a survival situation in the middle of the night.
Mine is the orange one, fits in a pannier with room to spare:

Or if you want a tent that absolutely, positively will never blow down. £30 off ebay, needed stitching up a bit and re-waterproofing:

Laughing That little green tent is the tiniest thing I've ever seen.

And I agree with the 2nd picture, used to use those tents in Cubs and the Scouts. Virtually bullet proof Thumbs Up

p.s. I hadn't put all the guy ropes out by that time but it wasn't windy at all anyway Wink

Yes, the simple A frame scout tents were brilliant, but also very very heavy..and the cheaper alternatives dont match up to the scouts canvas stuff Wink I had a brown one for years which we were given when the scouts upgraded to different style green ones. Thumbs Up

Nobody got anything to say about the offer on GetGeared?

"Kebab" tents I call them. Single pole. They take up almost no space at all in your luggage, my waterproof trousers are more bulky.

I've seen a good quality one (such as that one) stand up to a force 10 wind.

I fully expect to take a tent on my next trip overseas...providing its during the summer!

Then again you cant go wrong with booking a hostel in some places...

I use one of those little grrn tents, cost £17 I think, takes no rrom, large and strong enough for my lad and myself to rough camp on the mountains in the lake district.
For touring it is great as it takes 10 min to put up and take down, small enough to handle on your own and takes up no room.
I will be gutted when it wears out but I think gehart do one.
