First bike MOT

Well my first mot is coming up on wednesday ive booked it.

Its a 05 plate 50cc bike,
is there any hot spots with things thats likely to have broken i havnt noticed?

Any thing i should check before it goes in to avoid getting stitched over?

Do i need a reflector or something on the plate, as mates bike has and mine hasnt, will it fail on this?

Got white bulbs in the back indi's with clear lenses do they need to be orange to pass?

You need orange indicator bulbs or orange lenses. I wouldn't worry about the reflector to be honest as the M.O.T station will probably stick one on and then charge you for it. You can get them from bike dealers and shops.

As long as the brakes work and nothing is seriously wobbly like head bearings, wheel bearings, swing arm bearings you it should pass. Make sure all the nuts and bolts are more than hand tight as M.O.T testers can only check if they are hand tight.

Right ive got some inner lenses ill see if i can bodge them in there or get some orange bulbs from work,
And how do they test the brakes, as they work but the master cylinder isnt what it should be, ive got a new one on order but wont be here by mot time, Head bearings have a tiny bit of play i think but nothing to write home about, wheel bearings cant find any play neither with swingarm, im also wondering how there going to check suspension and that as it has a sidestand unless they have 2 people doing it :S

Check suspension they may just bounce up and down on it and see if it bottoms out, I'm not sure.

Also headlight might get checked for where the beam is aiming but that's pretty hard to adjust yourself.

Brake test is done on a roller that rolls the wheel at (I think) 5 mph and then the tester applies the brake and the machine gives a force in numbers. I don't know the tolerances for passing though.

And at 5mph i think itll be fine but anything over 40 and half way down the pedal does fack all

Suspension, i cant see any oil weaping out of the seals so i guess there fine? rear shock feels hard, but apparently thats how it should be.

Headlight, dont have the faintest whether thats right,

I feel a big heafty bill coming on

My headlights were a little low despite adjusting them as much as possible on the actual test. The comment 'they'll soon rise with a bit of throttle' came as a nice surprise as my ringer was pouting big time.

Thing is ill be in work while its getting MOT'd so id return to find a failure notice probably,

Might have to see if i can get the day off work.
Just went out to double check over and i also think the exhaust must be blowing or sounds like it down by the gasket when ears down there.

Might be a spend a whole months wages to fix LOL,
damn apprenticeship wage.

Being 16 and having a glorified ped i think im going to get taken for a ride personally.

What are you going to take the day off work for?

It's only an M.O.T. Just take it in, see what happens, if you return and it's failed see what on. It could fail on something really simple like needing new brake pads. They will ring you up anyway when it's ready for collection and when they do you can ask them if it passed and what work needs doing to it.

I work 8-4:30
they arnt open till 9
and they close at 4.
So its quite akward, id like to go pick it up at lunch but what if its failed where do i stand legally on driving it to work to get the work done? hmm

They expect me to leave the v5 under my seat outside and post the keys through there box, although i cant put the v5 under the seat as it dosnt have a seat Doh. and also if sumone steals my v5 then they own my bike =/
They still havnt explained how there planning to get the keys back to me if they close before i get out of work.

If it still has some time till the actual end date of the MOT then its fine to ride around or go for a second opinion.

Well it becomes 3 years old on
25th
Ive booked the test on 25th
so im guessing i have till 11:59pm? before mot goes out.
but i have work the day after which might be a bit akward :S

Mine failed the other day on the headlight, rear light and footrests.

He told me to go home and do the headlight myself, to make sure your headlight is ok you measure from the ground to the centre of the headlight and draw a line about a foot long the same height on the wall.. Now position the bike about 2 feet from the wall and make sure that the normal light shines a semi circle just under the line and full beam completes the circle on top of the line.

Took it back in the afternoon and it passed

For the back brake, it sounds worn, you might get away with adjusting it for the MOT but if you can replace them.

Just checked the pads seems to be some on there still,
double checked the cylinder and looks like the seals are fubared.
just paid for the replacement on ebay.
