Hi,

I've recently bought a Yamaha DT125R and after removing the side panel I've noticed that the silencer is broken away from the stinger where they're welded together. The silencer is a DEP one, I'm unsure what it's made of (ally?). I was wondering if is it possible to weld together as I've heard talk that ally can easily burn right through and is therefore difficult to weld. I wouldn't be undertaking the welding myself but just wondered if it's possible and how much it is likely to cost?

Ta in advance,
Jack

I once got an alloy wheel welded (it had a hole in it)
Took it to an engineering company, and the bloke there did it for £10 quid. Thumbs Up
Exhaust should be quite easy Thumbs Up

i seriously doubt an exhaust is aluminium... more likely mild steel or something.
therefore can be welded.

without a doubt, MIG welding will be the easiest to do, just make sure the feed and voltage is set perfectly on such a thin metal.

the best method i would personally use is TIG.
harder to get right, and i tend to set it up using a peice of scrap metal, but the weld itsself is much neater and IMO penitrates more easily.

basically...

MIG=cheap (about £30 ish if you pay someone to do it?)
TIG=possibly more expensive, as its a more skilled type of welding

The silencer is alloy, here's a link to the silencer in question.

Yeah you could Tig weld that, piece of cake. Be sure and remove the wadding and clean it thoroughly so it don't catch fire then all you gotta do if find yourelf a tame welder.

Alternatively you could bodge it for a while by rivetting a piece of plate alongside the broken bit, or even make an exhaust strap.

if its aluminium alloy, then i think it is going to be very difficult to weld properly, and i dont think it will be anywhere near as strong.

i could be wrong though

I not sure what type of alloy it is, but many people have told me it'll be difficult to weld. I'll take it to a friend of a friend (welder) and see if he can sort it for me, I'll let you know how I get on.

Ta,
Jack

It is certainly an alloy of Aluminium. I taught welding for several years at a local college, so I know it will weld ok, done a few in my time for the lads Rolling Eyes
As said, TIG is the best option for you, not difficult at all, just make sure the weld prep is clean and there is no trace of any oily residue, any young welder worth his money should do this easily.

Its a 15 minute job, cost??? I'd do it for a tenner. Wink

A friend of my Dad did the welding on the zorst for me in the end and I'd have to say it was a very tidy job. He also welded a headlight mounting bracket back together for me.

The cost? A four pack of Guinness ~£4

Bargain!

Ta again,
Jack
