these box's are everywhere but has anyone ever seen a cyclist in them? nearly every single cyclist ive seen just goes through the red lights, seem utterly pointless. Even if they did use the box they would just slow down the speed of traffic when the lights change, would we get into trouble if we used them to sit in at the front of traffic?

(unsure if this is a repost but search button just gives server is busy message)

They're there to allow cyclists to turn right easier at lights - by giving them space to get in front of the cars.

I think it is illegal to use them, but I have done many times in the past, it would have to be a cock of a copper to pull you up on it, and a copper you should have seen before using the space.

3 points for jumping a red light if they decide to do you for it. However I'd agree, cop would have to be in a really bad mood.

Cyclists will filter to the front anyway, but this allows them to move off in relative safety (not just turning right).

I dont understand why they have to be accross the width of the road. Theres no way a cyclist is going to pull off faster than my car or bike. Twisted Evil

agree with Mick here, why put them across the width of the road, IMO it's putting the cyclist at risk (that might be a good thing depending on how you feel about them though)

Largely the purpose of them. Easy way to cause congestion, adding more of an excuse for a congestion tax.

All the best

I use them, have been given a row for it by a policeman on foot, seen cyclists use them and seen drivers get a row from cyclists for using them. Laughing

The policeman told me that it was the same as crossing the stop line on a red light. He talked to a guy in a car too, I thought it was a bit off, the road works and subsequent traffic problems in Edinburgh just now are pretty aweful.

Thumbs Up

Probably so that those cars don’t try and out-accelerate the cyclists, pushing them to the kerb.

Ok, I do cycle a reasonable amount, but if I’m in a car I’m quite happy to give those that can be arsed to leave a bit more petrol for me to use some benefits Smile.

In London, we've got cameras there to remove the element of a bad mood copper. Every so often, there's a crack down, too, so everybody gets pulled.

In many countries, if there is no specific cycle lane (a wide, well maintained one, not one with drain covers and trees on it), and they use the same system as we here, there are two separate green lights, one for the bicycles and a few seconds later for the rest of the traffic. That seems to work, and clears the cycles before the traffic light GP starts.

If you're 100% sure that that there are no cops about and no traffic light camera, you could use it, then claim that the amber light came on too late for you to stop before the first Stop line.

16 weeks of total chaos & congestion has just finished in Blackpool.
It was caused by the addition of a 100yd cycle lane and one of those red cyclist boxes at a major junction.
What a waste of money by the council as the junction worked perfectly fine before and not many cyclists use the road anyway, they use the wide pavement as it is safer.

Its techinally illegal to ride on the pavement though. Well not sure about illegal in its self but it could be seen as dangerous and thus your still screwed if a copper tries it.

Why wait at trafic lights. Just pull up, turn the ignition off, push it on the pavement around the corner and then start it up and go on XD

**offtopic**

I would like to divert the cource of this topic and morph it into something about hwere bikes can go...can we just go upto the edge of a paestrian area, ignistion off, walk through with it and then set off on the other isde and it be legal?!? Also Bus and taxi only lanes, Key off, walk down the pavement with it untill you get where you wanna be XD
Not sure if those kind of things seem legal, But I managed something like it in my nearest town centre. no parking available, so I just flipped the engone stop and very slowley coasted (with my feet down walking with it also so it didnt look like I was riding it) down the pavement to park outside a shop. or do you acctually have to get off it and walk at the side for it to be legal?

**on topic**

I think it is illegal for a motorbike to use those areas, afterall you wouldnt be allowed in the cycle lane itself.
I believe they sould allow bikes of any kind to use advanced stop lines and such, And also bus/taxi lanes and also make th speed limits not count XD all of which I guess are equily as likely with our half assed goventment.
