This started tonight, it will change gear, but I have to physically push the lever back to it's usual position. When I do it stays there, but when I need to change down I have to push it down (as usual) but the life it back up with my foot before I can change down again.

It's a RVF400 btw. . .

Any ideas on what is happening/has gone wrong?

I've got a big journey on friday!

I had this on my RS 125 when it got knocked over, the gear bar (the part that connects the gear-box to the lever) is rubbing against your frame or engine casing and getting stuck, the way i did it was to un-do the end of the bar at the gears end (not the lever end) and move it out slightly, if its still getting stuck get yourself a file and just scrape a couple mm's off and it should be fine thats how i sorted mine.

Hope this helps you sort it or helps you identify the problem and solve it in a less brutal way than i did.

Is the gear change mechanism in good working order?,

by this I mean is the clamp and bolt which goes onto the gear change shaft in good nick?, me NTV bolt snapped and I had to do the same a few weeks ago, had to ride home in 2nd, as sometimes it gripped sometimes it didn't 5p repair.

I guess it is, as in it all looks ok to me. I haven't had a good look, but to be honest I dunno if I'd see if anything was wrong anyway Confused

May well be something very serious as described, but also if your bike has multiple linkages/pivots between to gear lever and the gear shaft, those often become seized up. Strip it down and lubricate it.

Ahh the gear shaft, thats what i was thinking of, the bolt may have become loose and it may have slipped down and started rubbing against the casing, its not that serious just move it back out near the end of the shaft and do it back up and jobs a gooden'

Hope this helps.

Wotcha.

Sounds like the gear change return spring has broken.
Not too bad a thing to replace on old pre-unit British stuff, but can be a pain on some modern engines.

Let's hope it ain't that then Thumbs Up

Make sure the lever linkage is tight on the gearchange shaft, if this doesn't cure it then chances are your detent spring has gone.

Broken one or 2 before, but not that major a job on a CG125, I wouldn't be keen on doing it on a RVF4.

Cheers
John
