Well yesterday my phone bill came out, And I didn't realise but the phone insurance came out too, Which took me to just inside my overdraft limit.

I thought there was still quite a bit of dosh in there, So ive made 4 transactions, 2 for petrol (bike and car), and one for Some food for the house etc.

I get paid tomorrow, Ive just checked my online banking and found out Ive gone past my over draft limit.

Not too much of a problem, Just transfered £500 out of my savings account to get it back into credit.

I took a trip to the bank, And they are now going to charge me £140 (£35 per transaction while over the limit), and then a following £20 admin fee.

So thats £160 bank charges, ALL coming out on the 9th July weather ive got sufficient funds or not.

I asked if they can take like, Half this month half next. But all they offered was to increase my over draft limit.

Err, I thought Banks were there to help. Confused

So im with Halifax, I'm just wondering if there are any better banks out there who aren't such cunts when it comes to bank charges?

Understood.

How can there be dosh in there if you're inside your overdraft? Surely if you're using your overdraft there isn't money there, only available credit? I think the issue here is that you think the overdraft is your money, when in fact it is a facility the bank can extend to you.

The downsides of being in your overdraft every month are quite bad. Apart from the interest, the bank can demand the money back at any time. And of course there is no fall back option if you need money...

My advice would be to be careful where overdrafts are concerned...

Im back in credit now ive transfered money out of my savings. I was just trying to hold out until tomorrow (pay day).
But meh, I just thought £35 per transaction was a bit steep.

Eh?

No, banks are there to make money for their shareholders.

I'm with the Royal Bank of Scotland. They have in the past increased my overdraft automatically to cover a funds defecit.

That said, I think this is more dependant on your local branch than the actual bank itself.

I'm with a small branch in a small town. They know who I am and about my account. They call me if there is ever a problem.

A big branch in a city centre might not give such a personal service, overdrafts etc are, after all, at the discretion of the manager.

My suggestion would be to find a smaller, out of town branch of whichever bank you choose and see how much attention they pay to you when you say you are considering moving your account.

I've just had the same problem with Lloyds TSB, I didn't quite have enough in to cover an outgoing payment (literally 50p ish short). They charged me for not being able to send the payment which then sent me into an un-authorised overdraft which they then charged me for and then charged me a third time for my unauthorised overdraft going further Rolling Eyes

So around £143 in charges all in one day, and would they write off a penny of it....would they fuck! Evil or Very Mad Two guys stood behind the woman I was talking to laughing when I was trying to sort it out and telling them that I hadn't recieved any letters to inform me.

Halifax and RBS are crap for this kind of thing too, but then RBS are pretty easy going and usually write them off as soon as you explain why it's happened.

I just cant believe how steep the charges are.

I can understand a fixed payment for going over the agreed overdraft limit.

But then to charge for each and every transaction, Weather it is £1 or £1000. They take £35.
Its a piss take.

ah well, my girlfriend suggested nationwide to me. Still not really sure, might have to go in and have a chat at my local branch.

lol, I just moved from Nationwide to Halifax. Nationwide have good products, but they're fucking useless when it comes to customer service. Phone banking is just an information service, you can't transfer money, no matter how much you try, you can't cancel standing orders, there isn't much you can do.

I think there are things you can do with an automated system, but they're rubbish. And they'll hammer you for charges just as much if you make a mistake like that, though if you want to complain, they'll tell you to write in or go to a branch (which is against the FSA regulations). I've got four complaints going in against they with the FOS. I desperately hate Nationwide with a passion. Good products, but that's it, if you need to do anything with your money, forget it.

All banks are rubbish, unless you have more money than you know what to do with it. End of. Sad

I should add that when I call the number at the top of my RBS bank statement. The phone is answered by a member of staff at my own branch.

Ive currently got a Loan with HSA. Im in my last month of interest free settlement. Which I have the money to settle it.

I rang the number on the letter to ask if I can settle it by debit card payment over the phone.

First of all I got

"Please listen to one of the following 9954285 options"

Then I got another list of options.
Then it asked me to key in my Account number on the key pad.
Then I was asked to key in my Date of birth on the key pad.

Then I was asked to select one of the following 3.
I chose the one that best suited me, And my answer was given to me by a robotic voice.

When I eventually got through to a human being, She was living in India and I could probably understand more Indian than she can understand English.

And the first thing she asked me was my Account number. Confused

I guess at least when I ring Halifax I speak to an English man/woman.

Nationwide did once charge me £35 for going £35 over, to be fair the account had no overdraft but still a steep cost. On the up side they waited till I had enough in the count till they billed me.

See halifax wouldn't even lift part of the bank charges. They wouldn't even split the repayment up over a couple of months. They are taking it all in a oner! Confused

First Direct

Talk to real people who understand you needs. Thumbs Up

Highest customer satisfaction of any bank in the UK, most recommend by its own customers.
What more can i say Mr. Green

Pretty sure the max you can be charged in 1 month in fee's is £150.
If this is the 1st time you have gone over your limit, i would be asking nicely for the charges to be waived, say that as soon as you realised you transfered cash from savings to cover shortfall, rather than leave it over limit. If they refuse then say you are closing your account and going elsewhere.
Often that last line will work.

I tried it all today. It lead form a formal discussion to a stand up argument in the middle of the bank.
I wouldn't mind but I was at the "Financial Advice" desk too. And all she could say was "Well Mr Riley, I could increase your overdraft for you".

Fucking slag.

Rolling Eyes There are limits what ordinary employees can and are allowed to do; cancelling charges is not one of them.

I've been with HSBC for about 15 years now and love them! I've had overdrafts bigger than some countries' budgets and they've never charged me.

HSBC are brill, I have been over my overdraft a few times and they either do nothing you call you and ask you when you next get money in and they have always been satified with my answers (Usually a week or 2) I have never been charged by them.

I went 7 quid over my HSBC overdraft a few months ago, came home to look up on the internet what the charge should be, far as I could tell HSBC charge you the amount you went overdrawn by, with a cap of 15 quid, so go 50p over and they'll charge you 50p.

Went and paid a tenner in the next day and I never got a bank charge anyway.

My student overdraft isn't as big as some of my friends though, not that thats important, since it's their money not yours.

Not one to nit pick but that's highest satisfaction for any telephone based bank, I was actually speaking to the guy responsible for their success from day one today.

Good shout though but if you want a high street bank with good customer service Natwest really are faultless.

My brother and sister have worked / is working at the Halifax headquarters just round the corner from my house. They were telling me that to get your cash back, you should ring them and say that you are sorry and were not aware of any charges. State that you will be extra vigilant in future in making sure that you don't get overdrawn.

If you go in all guns blazing about your legal rights, they will tell you to feck off as there have been a few cases recently where the banks have come out in the right.

This was a month or two back, but if you are going to ring them up, act apologetic. Don't charge at them with your legal rights, as the things you believe to be your legal rights may turn out to go against you.

I've rang halifax before about going over my limit (well 3 times) and got them removed.

They were pain in the arse ones though like the debit being taken out at midnight and my wages going in about 4 hours later and me being charged for being outside the limit Mad

If its the first one call them up, you can usually get them taken away.

As an aside - Has that verdict about bank charges come out yet?

I've had my Halifax account for 2 years now and because I was a dirty student they've probably had 4 figures off me in charges. The downside is you won't be seeing that money any time soon.

The upside is that once the high court case is done with (they have been fighting the Consumer Action Group or whatever it is) around the start of next year, provided the banks lose they will have to pay you back every penny, plus 8% APR. Bargain.

I'm with Natwest and think they're okay. I used to get quite a lot of charges but these days I'm a lot better with my money so it's not such a problem. I know on occasion they've halved the charges when I've phoned up. They also have a really nice online banking system (compared to HSBC's crappy one anyway!).

About 6 months ago, I claimed back over £4k of charges from Natwest for the last 6 years.

Great thing was, I realised after they'd paid the claim in full that I'd accidentely claimed all of my overdraft interest and Advantage Gold (£12/month) charges as well!

Did they notice? Did they fuck!
