What affect does moving the needle clip notch up and down have?
On NGK plugs, i know low numbers are hot and high cold, so does a colder plug make the engine cooler or other way round?
How do you test the mixture when the plug is only showing a dark brown colour?
I have two screws on the carb, one idle, one mixture, which way is leaner and which way is richer?
What could cause hard starting and cutting out?

I have a Reiju RS2

Nick.

on thats a bit of a mouth full but we'll start with

1. needle clip position..... if you lift the clip, it lowers the needle, making it leaner in the mid throttle, if you lower the clip position it lifts the needle, richening the mixture in the mids

https://justkdx.dirtrider.net/images/Smaller_PWK_highlow_speed_animation.gif

2. a hotter plug will burn hotter and burn the fuel better, but you face the risk of burning holes in things if you go too hot though, chances are if you think you need to change the plug from what the factory has set, then there is something else wrong... over oiling???
putting a hotter plug in will just mask another problem

3.. carb screws, all the way in is lean, all the way out is rich

4. could be caused by any number of things...... dodgy coils, dodgy cdi, dodgy plug, dodgy mixture, valve clearances, timing, and a million other things..
have fun Very Happy

hi,
thats a lot of questions!
i presume your bikes a 2 stroke?
anyway if it is here what i remember :
1 : needle controls mixture at mid-throttle .
moving the clip on the needle up will make you run leaner
moving the clip down will make it richer
2: stick to the plug recommended in the handbook, unless someone can come up with a good guide to plugs?
3 : test your plug/mixture with a new plug. do a plug chop.
4 :where is your air or mixture screw?
if its at airbox side its an AIR adjustment screw & clockwise = richer.
if its closer to engine, it a MIXTURE screw, clockwise (seen some on the underside, so tightening it ) = leaner
5 : if its hard to start & cutting out, find out what the stock settings are for your carb & start from there.
when is it cutting out, ie at what revs?
is it idling too low? & running too lean?
im sure others will be able to help you further.
cheers,
GAZ

Thats the important bit .....whether the screw is engine side or air box side ones for fuel, other is air get it wrong and new piston time

Hi, thanks for the replies. But unfortunately it is already new piston time, when i broke down i never stripped thetop-end and have had nothing but trouble since. I stripped it today, and found the piston slightly scored and a piece of the piston ring missing
Just ordered a new one. Crying or Very sad
Today, i found my needle clip was at the top so i put it in the middle (3rd) like it said in the manual and it wouldnt start then. So what that suggest i am running way too rich, as i have upjetted from 72.5 to 90, i had to goto 90 as it was the only other jet i had.
Would you think the jump in jet sizes is too big? and would the needle clip being lowered (richer mixture) cause it not to start (plug came out wet)

Thanks Nick.

The jet jump sounds big but it depends what modifications you have done. If it's only an exhaust it's way too big.

Just an exhaust and kn style pod filter, What size would you recommend, as im without a bike at the moment awaiting top end parts so once i get them, ideally i dont want to mess with it anymore. thanks for your help.

I'm really not sure as I've never really looked into it. Maybe try something in the middle of the 2 sizes. An 81?

I've heard that pod filters are very hard to set up though.

Yeah i think youre right, ive had nothing but trouble since i put it on there, now ive got myself a useless top-end and the bill of a new one. And still no closer to getting it sorted, firstly im running too lean and it heat seized, now i think im running too rich and its flooding and wont start, (sometimes starts and cuts out)
I think you may be right about half way between the two, i might get myself a few and experiment, im thinking of going completely back to standard, however the pod filter did give me that extra boost i needed to help me keep up with the expressway traffic i have to go through to work
THanks again for your help
Nick

Jets aren't that expensive. Just buy a few going up in sizes of 5 and then once you get it running close to of them buy 2 sizes in the middle of them and then experiemnt with them. Eventually you will wittle it down so that it is running on the perfect jet.

THanks for the tips mate, ive just got to find the right jet, the right needle cip position and the correct air/fuel mixture screw setting and do a few plug chops and that combined with a new top end i think i should be ok.. going to be lengthy and costly though Laughing
Ever wish you left it how it was Laughing

Plug chops only really work for top end though so when you are doing the mixture screw and needle position it is all guesswork really.

Yeah Crying or Very sad When i do a plugchop killing it at full throttle i get a dark brown plug? But when it idles its black.
Laughing This just reminded me of the first time i tried a plug chop, kill switch, clutch and back brake not a good combination for a noob Laughing Embarassed
