Quick question and more just out of curiosity (as I don't have a full licence yet). I like Hornets but how uncomfortable is it on a motorway with no fairing to duck behind?

I've heard 80mph if it's a short journey or stick to 60-70 for a longer one...though I'm not sure how accurate this is as I've never ridden a naked bike.

Thats about right Milo.

Although some naked bikes are better than other cos of the shape of the clocks/lights. And you can always lie on the tank if ya wanna go faster.

Top speed wouldn't concern me too much. If you're on a Hornet down the M4 for a couple of hours at 80mph is it ok or would it feel like sitting on the wing of an f-16?

You won't get a couple of hours at motorway speeds without a petrol stop, so its not that bad.

Sometimes on my 25 commute to uni on my unfaired NSR I'd get there with achey shoulders - othertimes I'd be fine. When I went the 80ish miles to Gav's I had no problems at all.

It's perfectly fine.

At first it feels a bit like your head might get ripped off, but after a few rides, you soon get used to it. Possibly your neck muscles just start building up to compensate!

Admittedly, on the R6 130mph was no prob and on the Trumpet 100mph feels a lot quicker so possibly if I were to go back to a faired bike I might notice less wind, but all in all it's no problem!

Get your unfaired Hornet now! Great bike!

Hi

On my 1200 Bandit 80mph cruising (in neutral conditions) is fine. As you start going above that it does get more wearing (although ear plugs add about 10mph to what feels comfortable). Nasty head wind and you can knock 10mph off your comfy cruising speed (easily), nice tail wind and you can add 10mph.

Quite useful really as it stops you going everywhere at silly speeds.

All the best

Keith

I think 70mph I comfortable enough to "cruise" at, but at 90mph I have to kind of lie down on the tank or I feel like I'm going to have my hands ripped off the grips.

Sounds like a Hornet is the way to go. I didn't like naked sports bikes originally but then last year sitting on Hornet 600 in the showroom.......awesome. I'm doing my DAS in about july/august time and hope to get a second hand 600 next year!

Top marks heading in the naked direction Thumbs Up .
Wind is part of the fun, and you appreciate speed much more on a naked bike, which i suppose is a good thing.
Be warned though, naked is not for the weak, theres no hiding behind a clear plastic sheet when it starts to hail Twisted Evil.

I'm not saying that people that ride faired bikes are pussy's, just.......

Even though my hornet is restricted at the moment, i've already been 300 miles on it, and tbh it was pretty comfortable, a lot more than the NSR. Speeds above 85-90 it starts to get a bit windy, and ducking down pretty much does nothing. I reckon a top bike after the NSR imo.

I found that your helmet had a bit to do with it.

With my old Lazer Rev (which is a very chunky helmet), it would try and lift up when you got above about 75, thus becoming a literal pain in the neck.

Then I went out on the CB in a different lid one day and it was soo much better.

Arai Cool , i suppose this would come into it, but it doesn't at the moment for me, plus i haven't been above 100mph on my bike yet.

Dunno i sat at about 90 - 100mph all the way up to Deans pub thing following Pheo and it wasn't that bad on an unfaired bike.

Although i have never really ridden faired bikes.

I find if i duck / lie on the tank i tend to want to fall asleep...

Only had my hornet a week but done about 200miles on it, I have a screen on mine which I’m told helps with higher speeds, i've found it comfortable. Longest journey has been bout 30mins at speeds between 60 and 80mph. Very capable bike even when restricted.

Ive been riding my GS naked since last summer. I find that above 75 it does feel as if you're about to lose your head and i agree with the other comment about helmets. I have a Lazer Tornado and i find that it tries to lift when i turn my head. The helmet is a good fit. Im fitting a full fairing to mine this spring and hope that to be better. Nakeds are great for around town but for any distance at 75+ speeds (more than 15-20miles) id probably want faired.

Do you find in winter that you get a bit chilly with only your helmet on Wink .
