I've been doing most of the more minor servicing stuff on my bike no probs. Saved myself a lot of money.

However, there's no way I'm up to valve clearance checks. I'm going to ring some garages and see what it will cost just for this alone but before I do I'd like a little advice.

Do garages do just a valve clearance check when you don't want the full service? I suspect they do.

Will they charge me significantly less than taking it in for the full service?

How much are we likely to be talking?

Cheers in advance.

I dont know hhow much it will be to get valve check but to be honest mate its a piece of cake.

Get a set of feeler gauges get service Manuel out have a look at the clearance they should have/ask someone on here. take rocker covers off and slide feeler gauge in. Dont have to take any of the engine apart normally unless somethings in the way of the rockers which is unlikely.

Give it a go save you some money.

A garage will quote about two hours labour, so that's about £150. Best buy feeler guages and try it yourself, it really isn't that hard to do.

Depends he has a GSXR1000 which will most definately be a shim valve system which does not have rockers and cannot be done with feeler guages and spanners alone.

Lock nut valves are easy , shimmed valves are not so easy as you have to take the engine to bits ie move the cam chain the cam shaft the lifters , and use a micrometer,

Not exactly true, you can CHECK the valves by removing the cam cover and using feeler gauges. Apart from removing the engine side-cover in order to turn the engine over with a spanner it's about all you have to do in fact (ok you have to remove the tank and airbox to get to the cam cover). Changing the valve shims is much more involved, requiring removal of the cams.

GSXR shim-under-bucket valves are very good at holding their tolerances though, and few engines under 20k miles should need adjustment. Many go much further.

I have a tool for taking the pain out of calculating shim sizes. I'll put it in another thread.

Thanks. Will perhaps give it a go myself. That tool would be great.

Bike is coming up for 14k miles and will be more like 17k when I check the clearances.
