I have just aquired a ZZR1100 and it's the first powerful chain driven bike I have had for years. I read on the internet they have an appetite for chains so I wondered what you sports bike riders recommend for chain lube. Is that chain wax any good?

My wifes Divvy has a Scott oiler and her GS500 just gets old engine oil on the chain. Personally I'm not that impressed with the Scott oiler so I don't really want to fit one to the ZZR.

I found wax made my shiny gold chain black and gunky.

I opt for 3-in-1 oil once every couple of weeks, rubbud in with a cloth. Normally straight after a wash (the bike, not me).

At work we use chain wax.

Cheapo spray grease has seen my chain/sprockets through 20,000 miles and it still looks good.

I usually use Motul chain lube factory line - i think its a sticky thing. 1 time try repsol, its also sticky. But NEVER use (if you meet) Ipone - its not hold on to the chain.

Every 400 miles? Ok I suppose if every ride is 200-400 miles long, but that's too long between lubing imo.

I do mine every other time i get back from riding it, use castrol spray lube at the moment, but its very waxy despite not being a wax which I don't like. Otherwise as someone said chainsaw oil is very good, but flingoff is really bad, makes a hell of a mess. I've got a loobman I keep meaning to fit, but the fitting procedure is a pain in the arse and extremely difficult to get it int position on the Blade swingarm.

I'm sure that's what the owner's manual says, so have just gone by that, but to be honest I think I will lubricate it more frequently.

Currently I am mostly using used sump oil in a scotoiler on my VFR750.

I did have a loobman which worked well but the sprocket retaining bolts on the VFR are REALLY near the edge of the sprocket, they kept clipping the injector head and breaking the cable ties.

Contrary to popular belief, my failure to purchase branded scotoiler oil has not brought about the end of the world, caused my genitals to wither and drop off or made my motorcycle spontaneously combust.

Scottoiler filled with any old crap I can find.

And got some compressor oil. It's pink. And it was free, 'cause I nabbed it from work. Very Happy

Whatever's available really.

I use a combination of used engine oil (when that's available) , WURTH Dry lube or Hein Gericke chain lube. I usually lube it after every ride (when i wash my bike) and adjust the chain every 1000 miles (checking it everytime i lube the chain).

Scottoiler ftw.

I hate having to clean and relube my chain with the spray on crap. It attracts too much dirt.

Because the scottoiler is constantly fing oil to the chain, it can allow a certain degree of fling off, which takes the dirt with it.

Used to need a clean and relube everyweek, now it gets cleaned every 4 weeks at the most, and never gets relubed (thats what the scottoiler is for ofc!).

Chain hasn't needed adjustment since i had it fitted.

I personally think cleaning and adjusting every week is obsessive and unnecessary unless you're a courier and doing 5/6 hundred miles each week.

I use dry lube (worth or the other) and do so every 300 miles or so, which for me is about every 3 days to a week.

I clean the chain every month or so and adjust when it feels clanky. I check chain stretch and tight spots quite a lot but on the bikes I've had the need for adjustment is rare.

I think people get paranoid about chains. The following guide is about right for commuters and hard riders for whatever unless you're a compulsive disorder candidate or a courier:

* Lube every week
* Clean every month
* Adjust every 3 months
* New chain and sprockets when they look worn, not when the main stealer says they do.

At first i used castrol chain lube but it just made a mess and loads of dirt stuck to the chain. I then used putoline dx11 and i found it alot better and my chain stayed cleaner.
