Hi guys, on my ZXR 750 J1 one thing that baffles me is why does my cooling system run coolant through the carb bank?

1. I came to my own conclusion that it was to prevent carb icing (since coolant actually runs warm after a while)

2. But then I read that it's to stop overheating from the manifold/head area.

3. But thirdly I bought a book on 4 stroke tuning the other day and in there it describes how some designs run the cooling system through the carbs to "assist in fuel vaporisation at low RPM" and there are performance gains to be had by bypassing this system.

Now a while ago I accidently broke one of the coolant T connectors that runs into carb number 1(from left to right on the bike) when I was upgrading jets etc so had to block it off from carb 1 but have had no problems from that so far.

Can someone enlighten once and for all why they designed it this way? (ps my haynes doesn't even mention it)

Cheeeers!!!!

Your first answer was correct. It's an inti-icing measure. Kawasaki had to do 100% recalls on many of their early liquid cooled 4-strokes to retro-fit anti-icing systems for the UK market.

Must have cost an absolute fortune, they just fit them as a matter of course these days.

Wait until the cold damp weather and you will. As Stinkwheel says above my KLR600 was recalled for the mod as it was a pig in the Autumn and winter months.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've actually suffered carb icing in the really bad weather we (uk) had early april when it was raining and very cold. This was before i snapped a connector. Still the ZXR ploughed on eventually!!! Nothing stops this bike.
