textile jackets

I am from the institute of motorcycle research in CA. i have undertaken extensive research into various motorcycle related activities. During my latest research assignment i have discovered that the older generation of motorcyclists tend to use textile jackets instead of leather, opting for comfort over style. In fact my findings indicate that over 60 % of all textile jackets purchased in the greater Los angeles area are purchased by motorcyclists over 40 years of age. Does anyone else have any facts thoughts are comments on this topic?

I wear a textile type when it is cold, or raining, I tend to wear my leather one when its nice weather. I am one of the younger riders.

It's easier to get textiles to fit the larger rider than it is to get leathers.

Have you looked at the types of bikes ridden by the people buying the textiles? Perhaps your older riders are more likey (in general) to be riding something less sporty and thus feel for whatever reason that leathers aren't required.

I cheated and got a jacket that's a mixture of both! (Its got leather shoulders and arms but textle everywhere else.

And I suppose I'm in the not quite older but not really younger rider bracket? (age 30)

Hi

Use textiles almost all the time. Ride pretty much all year round (I try and avoid the snow). Comfort, ease of use, ability to shrug off changes in weather (soggy leathers ) and warmth are probably the main factors.

The best protection is not to fall off. After that the levels of protection offered by various types of clothing are pretty much degrees of nothing.

Leathers = 1 pce perforated = Hot summer days 2 pce = The rest.

I'm not keen on textiles after seeing what happened to a mate of mine in his. I know it depends on the clothing, brand and accident but I'd rather stick to leather and I'm probably in the older age group 32.

As California is different to the UK weather wise are you talking about different textiles to us? We mainly use heavy duty Cordura type clothing not so much the lightweight suits you use in the States.

Ashamed to say, but while looking for a first bike I was wondering what to get as I wanted to do a bit of travelling on it around the country, I did take a casual glance at a second hand BMW at my local dealers.

Quickly came to my senses though.

Back to the topic in question. I chose the mixed jacket as I took note of what people on here had said about leathers being better for protection. My old jacket was textile and it was more a comfort and ease of use thing that made me go that way.

Besides, my fat frame isn't really designed to go into a set of leathers. I can only imagine the mickey taking that would occur if I rolled up to meet people off here for the first time looking like something out of a Soho backstreet cellar...

Fazer 600. Picked it up Tuesday and haven't stopped smiling yet.

But still running in, it had zero miles when I got on at Harrogate, now has a proud 157 after a trip home via Donington Park!

Yes, its a 53 plate but was brand spanking when I picked it up. Registered in February. I got a great deal so went for the new model. (And I'm a sucker for the bits like the underseat exhausts and the digi dash!)

I've heard the unfaired version looks a bit funny as the dash and things are offset, but I've got no complaints so far. Tell him to try one and see what he thinks. I wanted a faired or part faired bike as I'm not too keen on naked look bikes, but that's just me.

You may note that this is primarily a UK based forum, so a bit different climate to LA .

I wear a textile jacket to and from work, local shops etc.
If I'm doing longer trips for transportation reasons I'll add some textile trousers.
For going to bike meets, fast road rides and cack handed stunt sessions (as opposed to wheelies on the way to work :-\) I'll wear 2 piece leathers.
I wear one piece leathers on track.

I'm 24 (meh :'() and ride a mixture of sports/trail/general bikes.

I noticed the other night at stormy that both Mike and shaun where wearing their textile jackets over their leathers, interesting really, might give it a go. best of both worlds.. lol

I wear a textile jacket and textile jeans at the moment. They are waterproof and have armored shoulders, elbows, spine and knees. Jacket cost £139 and the jeans were £110. The armour is quite good and it's damn warm even in this nasty weather. I was actually sweating in them the other night when it was freezing temperatures.

I wear a textile Alpinestars T-stunt jacket all year round, it's a summer jacket so gets a bit cold in winter

I always wear a fleece over my jacket, summer or winter and find the textile fairly comfy. I've never crashed with the textile so don't know how it'll hold up really but seems to be good.

Might get a leather jacket this year don't know, but I am definitely getting some textile trousers as they are much more convenient for work etc.

I have only got a Hein Gericke All Season Cordura (is that how you spell it?) jacket and trousers. Both have removeable linings so are good in summer and winter. Oh and I am 20.
I chose textile stuff as it hides my beer belly cause its full of padding
