Hey all. I'm about to change the oil and filter on my bike. I did this when I first got the old dear about 500 miles ago, and the oil coming out of it was nothing short of disgusting, and the filter looked more like it came off an old dishwasher than a bike. It had been stored in a garage for 5-7 years Confused .

I was going to run an oil flush through the bike this time, to get rid of any last traces of muck.

Any one got any recommended brands, any tips or anything else that I should know but maybe don't.

Thanks in Advance Karma

I'd just use cheap engine oil and do a short-interval oil change.

If it's the CB, check to see if there is an internal gauze filter, these can get seriously yakked up.

Hi

As above. I do sometimes use flushing oil, but a cheap oil and regular filter changes for a bit would be just as effective.

Possibly consider using a diesel oil as these tend to have higher detergent levels and most will almost certainly comply with the oil requirements of a Superdream.

All the best

Keith

SERIOUSLY stupid advice as you don't mention any parameters for the use of diesel as a replacement for engine oil Rolling Eyes

I Run all my bikes on 15w/40, seems to be fine and its a fair bit cheaper than 10w.

Cheers

FWIW on an old bike I wouldn't recommend any oil flush.

That's because all the little pathways will be worn in a certain way and will contain crud. A flush may deposit that crud in different places and upset the pathways.

As said, just run on oil, semi-synth should be ok unless it's a really old bike (even then, mineral oil isn't mineral oil anymore) and do the oil/filter changes more often as a pair.

Seriously misread the post. He said "Use a diesel oil" not "Use diesel instead of oil".

I did read about oil flushes upsetting old worn in engines, and for all my knowledge (the little there is) it does make sense.

I probably will just get hold of some cheap tesco value oil and run that through for another 500miles.

What are the benefits of mineral oil, semi synth and fully synth? and would using anything other than 10w/40 do any harm? I used semi synth last time with no problems.

My cb250rs and my CG125 are both run on 15w/40 oil, brought for £8 for 5 litres at lidl.

They havent complained, and it meets all the standards required.

I think its not so much the quality of oil you use that matters, more the time you change it.

Give it an oil change every 1k and it will go on forever.

Cheers

What we do with big old US V8's is throw a quart of ATF in before draining the oil & let it idle for 20 minutes or so. Some of these old lumps have a 1/4in layer of gack in them & it all comes out eventually.

I'd throw a pint of ATF in with the oil thats in there now & let it idle for a 15 minutes or so & then dump it out.

Hi

Cleans the rubbish out. Large detergent content (just like diesel engine oil).

All the best

Keith
