For those of you who haven't taken a test yet (or when you were a learner) do/did you ride with L-plates, both or just a back one?

I rode with them for about 6 weeks. Then took them off. Then started using motorways. Never got done, never had any problems.

I just used to have the rear plate on and didn't get any hassle. I wouldn't recommend it though, it's something like 3 points per plate, not sure about fines and I'm fairly sure that there would be implications to the insurance in an accident.

I kept both on. I guess some drivers will be a little more aware of you with them on also (haha I wish.)

I kept both on for about 9 months until the front one fell off, then did 2 months with just the rear plate until my test. Motorways weren't an issue where I live so it didn't really make sense removing them.

Had one on the back cut down too just the letter, took the one off the front, got porked once and i told him it had blown off, depends on the bike, mine was a fairing less 50 so the one on the front would have looked so nasty, but bikes with smoked screens and stuff you can hide it behind and still have it look pretty good.

OR, you could just have both on for a month and take your test.

That's what I did anyway.

It's better to ride with them on, it let's other drivers know you are fairly inexperienced, but more importantly it's better when you pass your test to be able to rip 'em off and rip 'em up!

Other thing is, if you got a fast 125, cough....nsr..cough, you can take the mickey out of the boy racers, cos nobody likes being overtaken by someone with L plates, is great fun to wave too.

I had both on my Kwak 125 for a while. But the front one was on a bracket on one of the forks and it snapped off, so I never replaced it. Kept the back one on though. But I was only using it for commuting, so I didn't really care. Wink

I rode with both on and I didn't use motorways, you're not licensed to ride the bike on the motorway! If you think you're good enough to remove your L plates then take your test and you can remove them.

Had them for most of the time i was ment to. My mate got pulled without any on his bike and got 3points.

If you do take them off and get stopped, just say "sorry officer, they were there when i checked my bike at the start of my journey".

I had them on until I started using motorways then I took them off. I'd put them back on when I wasn't planning on using motorways for a while. But eventually I got tired of taking them on and off so left them off.

My parents kept nagging me to keep them on or do my test, so I put them back on and booked my test.

About a week later I got pulled over by a nasty copper for a minor offense (which I got 3 points for), luckily I had my L-plates on at the time. He would have tried almost definitely tried to give me points for the L-plates if I didn't have them on.

Oh, and I really don't see the point in having just one L-plate on, because if a copper sees you've only got one you've got a good chance of being pulled over.
Whereas if you didn't have any or had both they wouldn't pull you over.

My front one lasted 3 days before it came off, the rear lasted about 12 months before I got fed up of replacing it.

I have never bothered with a front one, I think they would look crap on the front (on trial style bikes anyway).

Whats the point of just having one? It makes it far easier for a cop to do you for lack of L plates.

I had both on my ped. If its doing 33mph, chances are its a 16 year old on a ped. No reason to not have L plates there.

Always had the back one on my 125, had the front one on for most of the time.

As pho says, your a learner. If you want to use motorways, just do your test.

Always had them on (mind you didn't ride it that much Laughing )

The rear one was just a piece of paper in a plastic wallet. Laughing and the front was stuck to the inside of the screen.

Got stoped once as the cop (bike) didn't see my front L plate when I nodded to him. Laughing

But had no problems and to be honest didn't see the point of not riding with them on.
