Any idea whats wrong and what i should look at. Seems like the needle got stuck on 7 but has gradually pushed up to 8 but wont knock back down.

I messed up a rev counter a while back on my old bike. What I was doing was lubing the cables like you do but a must have got some inside the rev counter where the cable goes in. Those things are meant to run dry and this messed it up.

Check that the printed face isn't touching the needle and stopping it from returning.
