OK so in the past week the signs have stated going up.

Parking Zone E in Westminster will be the next trial area to charge bikes to park in central london. The new charges should be in by 4th August 2008.

£1.50 a day and some discounted rates for a week or a month up to £150 per year.

I now have to balance up if it is worth me continuing to ride in or stump up the £30 pounds a week for a travel card and ditch the bike.

With insurance and fuel charges in central london it is starting to look as though with this added cost i may be better off stopping biking. Does anyone know of any petitions or rallys against this? I may have to write a letter to boris and see what he thinks.

WTF, £1.50 the robbing gits. I thought the whole point of trying to get people to get on their bikes/motorbikes was to free up the congestion in London. There is absolutely no other point of this but to get more money out of the working man.

I mean they were already getting cheeky with their parking tickets if your parked 1 inch outside the bike bays.

Do you know who has implimented this? I will find the relevant complaint area.

Also take time into account. How much time would you save by going on the bike? Time is very valuable.

Hmmm Thinking Are you an all-year whatever the weather Mon-Fri bike using commuter?

If so then a yearly charge of £150 over 50 weeks a year is £3 per week or 60p per day on top of your existing charges.

versus £30 per week = £1500 per year minus what you pay in road tax, insurance and petrol for that period.

Now re-reading your post did you mean the year discount was £150 or the year charge was £150? Confused Seems a big discount as £1.50 / day for 50 weeks is £375 (but hey!)

This is old news really, I posted a while back about this because it was originally supposed to be up and running already.

It's bullshit, but as usual we'll moan and pay. Then they''ll expand it to all boroughs and whack the price up.

Found it...click here for the plans and click here for online feedback form.

I've also seen this page that says plans in place way back in 2007 and it is £150 per year.

I know it was old news but now they are expanding the "Test" areas, I would say that if they are allowing you to sign up for a years parking this will be a permanent feature of london from now on.

I ride all year round but do buy travelcards sometimes at the weekend. If i got rid of the bike i would have an extra £500 from the insurance and would save on servicing and fuel/tax.

Ok /edit

A quick summary of cost

tax £60
service £100
fuel £442 (£17 x 26 i fill up once every two weeks)
insurance £500
Parking £150

Total £1252

Travel cards would cost me about £1440, the time differenceis not a lot about 10 mis a day. I would also be able to go for more work drinks (mmm that would cost me more).

Cheers Map that does help,

A few interesting points about this, good and bad;

As motorcyclists can only park in Westminster City Council car parks with a season ticket at present, the council will be investigating the possibility of introducing casual parking.

So bikers must provide a season ticket at present, so my understanding of that means it must be displayed on parking. So what about theft of this ticket as it must be displayed? Do we get a ticket or is it all done by the vehicle reg?

Also on their great investingation they are going to introduce casual parking bays. Is that not what they have now? Confused

all these improvements do come at a cost,

So their gonna charge £150/year/biker to paint some new line, add some signs and hire some more Hitlers. So this is where you money is going.

The City of Westminster will also be improving facilities for riders by putting in security devices wherever possible. These devices will help to try and combat potential crime.

But, looks like they have really started to think about the 'people' and their belongings. It will be interesting to see what they come up with as 'security devices' is a bit vague.

Personally I have never had a real issue with parking in London, crowded at times in the bays, but you can always find another one that is close by. But they surely know what is best for their district.

Should be interesting/annoying at the same time IMO.

Earlier this year, in Torqauy, I was turned away from a private car park, manned, for having a bike, even when I offered to pay the same rate as a car. Cunt.

How does a season ticket for a biker work then? Do you have to buy one for each bike you own? Or do you stick it some magical place on your bike where it will not blow away, or be easily stolen?

I think it will work on a per bike basis same as for cars. The parking in the street is all done by mobile phones now in this area so you call up and register that you have parked there. This then links the central DB with the parking warriors who will give you a ticket when instructed to by the hand held machine.

Every car they walk past they put the numberplate in now so i think this is how it works. (correct me if i am wrong.)

Ahh, I did not know that. They would probably do it that way then, as a ticket or permit (physical permit) would be rediculous, as there is no place to put it.

Well, I hope they do it that way, as it make a lot more sense then a physical permit.

I think you may be right, but it's fucking stupid. Lots of us bikers have more than one bike...

you know, it just shows it's all about tax, and they don't give a fuck about getting us on public transport.

Hi

I live and ride in London and at the moment we have a dual system. Permit and solo m/cs.

Solo M/Cs are as usual choc a block BUT free, but without any security devices as i know of..

Permit only M/C spaces have a central anchor point that you 'flip' up (looks like a sink plug hole with a coke can type tab) to attach chain/security device.

they may be only metres away from each other, but be aware, (even motorbike shop guys have fallen foul to this.)

When riding in London, and ALL spaces are full, check that the empty one you find is FREE.

I Parked in Permit only not realising (empty space , late for work, etc;) and while walking away wondered why it was so empty, checked back at lunch time and matey was heading in to slap ticket on my machine... Shocked

a Quick smile while talking to parking idiot, let me start up bike and slap it in gear before he starts writing ticket, saving me XXXXX£

remember to check,.......... if its empty and all others are full....WHY !!

Hopefully this wont end up getting rolled out across London as I've noticed that since Boris came in some of Livingstones daft anti-everything-except-buses policies have been shelved/reversed.

I know this one is council driven but the Mayors office/TFL Surface Transport has veto over schemes like this I believe.

Change of plans - instead of meeting at the pub next week please try to come to the Council's Built Environment Policy and Scrutiny commiittee meeting at City Hall, Westminster on Weds 3rd Sept at 7pm. Tickets for public attendance available in reception from 6pm. This is the committee that gave the go-ahead to charging motorcycles a year ago. We should be allowed to raise questions. I can think of plenty.

See this report, which forms part of Wednesday's agenda, esp section 2.

iirc the London system works on having registered your bike on some website and paying by mobile phone.

What if you are just a visitor to London?
