just a few questions
1. are they legal?
2. what is the penelty if u get caught?
3. do they have any advantages? (like not getting caught by speed cameras)
4. where can u get them from
and is it legal to have a message put under the numbers?

They are indeed illegal for road use...for two main reasons:

1.) Size of the plate
2.) Typeface used

Most companies won't make you an illegal-sized plate with the legal font...

...in my opinion, the main advantage is that they look nicer!

...I think that it's a little sad that the law will treat someone as a criminal for having a small plate... Evil or Very Mad

1) Nope, not legal
2) Not too sure, I expect it would be 3 points and a small fine
3) Not sure
4) Nearly any bike shop will do one up for you
Nope, u cant have anything on the plate except the numbers. No border, nothing

They are illegal. Mine is 9x3, some wierd looking font (not standard) and I have a slogan underneath. Was told at a bike meet if u get pulled its a £20 spot fine, and no points, don't take that as gospel though, was only some bloke at a local bike meet lol

dunno if you guys know the cameras can read the plate no matter how small letters are unless the font is changed i e italic
i know ive been there from a plate i thought you couldnt read stationery at 10 ft.
was shit lucky £35 fine they removed the plate there n then had to park it up.

funny thing is its not an m o t failure however small as long as its readable and not cracked

AFAIK Gatsos photos are still examined by 'real' people and thus italics etc. shouldn't cause a problem. Digitals cameras /might/ have a problem but AFAIK all/allmost all are front facing and thus not a problem for bikes anyway.

Looked at this yesterday cos I fancied one myself! check out this link for all the info.

https://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/reg_marks_current_requirements.htm

Seems like they have stuffed us all round Sad

Even if you make the plate with the minimum borders 11mm and keep the characters to 64mm x 44mm and spacing 10mm you still end up with
a bloody big plate Sad

Quote "Offences may result in any or all of the following"

* A FINE OF UP TO £1,000

* THE REGISTRATION MARK MAY BE WITHDRAWN

* THE VEHICLE MAY FAIL THE MOT TEST

only the refelective plates stop you getting caught on camera, because of the way they are made when the camera flashes the flash just bounces of your plate and all the cops get to see is a nice bright light where your plate should be.

Except that it doesn't work. Never has, never will. All these "reflective plates" "flashback bulbs" "stealth covers" are just snake oil, if you're worried about being caught speeding learn where the speed traps are on your routes and you can avoid them... As for mobile traps we passed 3 this weekend while riding and we knew they were coming up from about 10 miles away due to the sheer number of bikers (and even some of the cagers) trying like crazy to warn us.

Basically, if you're worried about getting caught speeding, then don't speed!...or invest in one of those Geodessy jobs...the coppers are obliged to register the location of speed traps (inc. mobile ones) every day...(but it might depend on your area)...

...I usually "respect" speed limits, and just settle for chucking the bike round a few bends!

Several, I believe:
The obvious one: know where there are speed cameras on your route ans slow down.
Go over something like 160-180mph and they won't be able to catch you.
Folding Number plates (likley to get you in trouble if the pigs notice them)
Big Wheelies/burnouts to hide your plate.

In general it'll be the points not the fines you'll be worried about. In most cases your insruance bill will be a lot higher next year than the fine you have to pay a tthe time.

Put your number plate on the front and say you're dyslexic.

Prob with going 160+ is that it will take one pic of you, just not the second so they still have your reg no and although they cant determine the speed they will know it bloody quick!!!!! lol

It's now something like 240mph I think since they altered the tilt angle of the cameras... Doubt anyone's even mad enough to try at that speed!

If you want to read up on this sort of stuff try the SpeedTrap Bible. The site's become crowded with banner ads and popups lately, but all the good info is still there.
