Im pretty sure i know whats up but ill go over the situation and see if you guys have anything to add, its a little (very) long winded i warn you but stick with me please i could do with the help Laughing

Condensed version in the next post Thumbs Up

I went to pick my mate up from work the other day but he got out late so i ended up waiting around, stupidly i left the engine running on tickover for about 15 minutes.

On the way home it seemed fine, pulled as strong as normal and i reached 80ish MPH so there was nothing wrong there.

Later that night i take the bike out again, it seems fine, only had to run 10 minutes down the road and back again but i had no issues.

Next day (yesterday) im popping down to town to meet my friend for lunch, i can tell on the journey in that the bike isn't running right, its revving fine at traffic lights but as soon as i put it under any strain i.e. hauling my fat ass around, it struggles, it has no mid range at all, its still faster than cars but not anywhere near what it should be.

Anyway i think nothing of it and make a note to have a look when i get home, i went and had lunch and then went to head home, this is where the real problems began.

I started her up allright, rode down the spiral (parked in a multistory) and started on my journey home, i go to pull away from some traffic lights and theres no power at all, mega slipping of the clutch to get it moving, i can tell its not going to be a fun journey home.
Now im stuck in traffic, only for a minute or two waiting to pull onto a duel carrigeway, by the time i get to the front im having to use my legs to push as i use the clutch to try and get the bike going, its really bogging down and once i get onto the duel carrigeway its got nothing, it works its way up to 50mph, takes about 15 seconds, i can feel the left hand exhaust getting increasingly hot, while the right feels unsualy cold, its only running on one cylinder and its not liking it at all Exclamation I stop at a roundabout and immediatly i get a smell of burning, like hot metal, i filled up on 2 stoke oil that morning so theres no way im out of it already, with no idea whats going on i struggle on home, by now im struggling to overtake a 20 year old transit van Confused not good.

When i get home the bike dies pulling onto the drive, good timing but a little bit worrying, I go inside to calm down for a few minutes and when i come out i can hear a very faint sizzling sound, i squeeze a rad. pipe and it gets louder, bit worried the head gaskets on its way out but the bikes still got plenty of compression and its not loosing water...

Anyway i start the bike up and it goes on both cylinders and revs fine, confused and slightly annoyed i take the plugs out for a look, the first plug comes out a nice brown coulor, nothing wrong there, the 2nd plug however is all black and oily, co-incidently on the side that wasnt firing, BINGO i think and clean the plugs up and swap them over, i go for a quick ride around the block and to my dissapointment its regularly backfiring and still only running on one cylinder. I give up for the evening and watch Big daddy instead Laughing

Anyway this morning once again the bike fired fine and ticks over like normal, i take the plugs out again and this time they're both oily and black Confused now i am very confused.

Dads diagnosis is that from leaving it ticking over for so long ive oiled up the insides of the engine and thats why its not running right, he said to clean up the spark plugs and go for a good blast to clear it all out, makes sence to me.

Any other ideas or thoughts as im seriously at a loss this time...

p.s. ruled out flooding carbs as i changed the float valves recently and neither of them has any fuel coming out of the overflows.

cheers

Condenced version. (no need to read if u read the first post)

I left the bike ticking over a few times and got stuck in traffic etc...

The plugs are black and oily and the bike keeps back firing, there is no power and it only appears to be running on one cylinder at times.

I think its just all oiled up on the inside and its ruining the plus.

any second opinions please?

1st thing I always do with with a misfiring 2 stroke is buy new plugs.

the major clue there is that you left it idling.

things to do:

1) change your sparkplugs
2) decoke your exhaust.

Hi

Given that it ran fine afterwards I would doubt the primary problem is you leaving it idling.

However having run it home on one cylinder it has probably done a wonderful job of leaving loads of oil and petrol on that side (in future carry some spare plugs and swap them in when the problem occurs).

All the best

Keith

It appears you have never tried changing the plugs on a TDR Laughing

unfortunatly changing the plus while on the go also involves carrying a flathead screwdriver and a foot long spark plug spanner around with me, the screwdriver isnt the issue but im sure you can see the problem with the spanner Laughing

When my TDR250 ran on one cylinder I checked the carbs, replaced ht leads and caps and spark plugs. All which were then fully functional, however after all of this the bike still run on only one cylinder only after a short period of running the bike (about 10-20miles).

I then saw that the powervalve connector had worn out and wasn't openning the valve on the r/h cylinder (the problematic cylinder) but the valve was openning on the l/h correctly. So I fixed this connector and thus the valves were openning in sync, after that I've experienced no problems and the bike pulled really well and has ever since.

My theory is that at high revs the valve wasn't openning and then the intake of fuel/oil mix exceeded the ability of the cylinder to rid of this mix via the exhaust port (due to the closed valve position). This excess fuel/oil mix then fouled the plug, which then couldn't ignite the fuel causing it to stop running.

When I did take the plugs out the r/h cylinder (problematic) was soaked in petrol/oil mix and the l/h was a nice coffee brown colour.

The easiest way to check the valves are openning in sync is to take off the exhausts and look up the exhaust port. Then get someone to switch on the ignition, during the valves self cleaning cycle you should see whether they are openning smoothly and in sync.

Hope this helps,
Jack

P.s. Doing any mechanical work on the TDR250 is an absolute pain in the ass, everything is so tightly packed together.

Mr. Green well it appears it was the sparkplugs at fault, well one of them to be precise, ive cleaned them up well enough to work for now, ill have to wait a few weeks to get some new plugs.

jackdim do you know what plugs your running? Ive got NGK BR9's in there at the moment, just wondering if perhapse i should be running 10's Question

Its the exhausts that are the problem when working on the TDR Laughing thet're right in the way of everything, i fancy i set of underslung pipes (think its martin off of tdr250.co.uk makes them?) im trying not to spend too much money on it though as chances are i wont be keeping it to much longer.

cheers for all the help everybody

Martin does make underslung pipes for the TDR, PM him and ask him about them. His prices are extremely good and the workmanship is 2nd to none.

I run BR9ES and haven't experienced any problems. Although some forum members say that BR9ES aren't upto high revving sessions i.e. Trackdays. They say to run BR10EV's (iridium) which aren't too hot for high revs whilst not fouling at low revs . I wouldn't run BR10ES though as these are probably too cold and will most likely foul at low revs.

I'd personally stick with the BR9ES's as they're far cheaper and as adequte as the BR10EV's for road use.

I'm glad to hear it's running again.

Let me know if you do decide to sell it, PM me now if you want with an idea of price if you do decide to sell it Thumbs Up

Ta,
Jack

EVs are not iridium tipped. They are platinum tipped and a hell of a lot cheaper than the iridium ones (IX I think).

All the best

Ah right, never realised that. Nonetheless the EV's are recommended by Yamaha to be used in the TDR250.

Hi

Seems that they are happy enough with the BR10ES as well, which would be cheap enough (exactly the same price as a BR9ES on https://www.sparkplugs.co.uk ).

Looking at their prices it looks like the EVs have gone up in price and the iridiums have dropped.

All the best

Keith
