'Overwork' kills Toyota employee

One of Toyota's senior car engineers died from working too many hours, a Japanese labour bureau has found.

Shocked

Shocking. It even has a name!

Workplace stress is common all over the world, but it is a huge problem in Japan, where karoshi was first recognised as a phenomenon in 1987.

No danger of me dying from over work. Its more likely to be boredom. Brick Wall

I have a friend who is an engineer, he works way to much. Keep telling him to slow down but he won't. He'll start at 8am, lunch at his desk, then home for tea at 6ish then back in for 4 or 5 hours, he does that 6 days a week.

I used to run an amusement arcade. During the high season, I regularly did 9am till 12 or 1am 7 days on the trot. You can't maintain it though...

Thumbs Up

Yep, that rings bells.

Back in my 'catering lacky at theme park' days I did a short spell of working 8:30am till 6:30pm with half hour (junk food eaten in the back) lunch, back for 8:30pm till around midnight, 6 days a week.

Only managed to keep it up for a couple of months. Spending all day and night sweating in a mixture of rancid chip fat vapour, industrial degreaser and pepsi syrup in a boiling hot kitchen, then dealing with rude, drunken scottish* tourists in the middle of summer isn't my idea of a fulfilling career!!!

*Not all the rude drunken customers were scottish. And some of the scottish customers were nice, not rude. But still generally drunk. Wink

The only thing I miss from that job was the endless supply of bacon and egg baps & chips, cheese and beans I got for free from the cafe...

The guy behind the counter loved the Alpine Ski video machine and I had the keys for it and everything else...

Thumbs Up

it doesnt say how many hours he was doing though. 80 hours overtime a month could be on top of a 40 hour week which means he is doing 60 hours a week. a lot of truckers do that as a normal week. i know i moan if i do less than 12 hours in a shift. last weekend i did 27 hours in 2 days. an 8 hour shift is hardly worth getting out of bed for. truckers make their living from overtime. the working time directive was meant to cut our working week down to an average of 48 hours per week. fortunately no one is enforcing it so we can still work over 70 hours a week Thumbs Up

I've studied the Japanese economy and this sort of thing does happen, rarely, the first case of a company being found guilty of killing an employee through overworking them was in 1991 by one of the big advertising firms in Japan, the guy hung himself in his office after working 17 months without a day off!

I sold a 21 year old toyota on saturday.
Most of it looked and felt like it was 3 years old.

Never owned or driven anything designed and built anything remotely as good as a toyota. The company may be bastards, but the cars work.

Mechanically they might be ok, before i left our whole area had a meeting / bollocking because in the past 6 months every car that has rolled off the production line has at least 14 visible defects on it, but they still get sold and no one ever really inspects new cars in a showroom.

Your sig is logically flawed bENN, if the sports listed require one ball, racing by the same logic requires none.

No it didn't, I understand the dual meaning of testicle and ball, but i'm saying for the jokes sake it makes no sense, it's only as a rugby player that I mentioned it not being correct, both as a joke and as a sentence Very Happy

I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad would kill us, and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."
