hi guys im new.

im looking to get my motorcycle license. i have a full driving license and am going to be buying a Yamaha TZR125 as my first bike.

What do i need to do to get bike license? does my drivers license help at all? and is the TZR 125 a good bike for my first?

If you haven't already got a provisional motorcycle licence you need to apply for one. Then you can do CBT and ride on L plates.

What you do next depends on your age.

i am 20. so after a cbt course i can be on the roads on a 125?

You don't need a theory. After you pass the CBT you can ride a restricted 125 on the road, without going on a motorway and not carrying pillions.

Then you have two choices. You can either pass your test on a 125 and be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years or wait until you 21 and do DAS, which means you wont have any restriction.

If you have a full car license then you won't need a provisional, if you don't have motorcycle entitlement on it you'll have to send off your license and get the DVLA to add it.

You need to get the provisional bike entitlement added to your license if you don't have it already. Once you have that you can go and book yourself onto a CBT (compulsory Basic Training), you have to complete this before you can ride anything. Once you have done the CBT you can ride a restricted 125 on L Plates. If you want to do a test you will need to pass the theory test as well as a DSA practical test.

If you are over 21 at the time you want to do the practical test then you can do the Direct Access, you can then ride any bike unrestricted. If you do the test before the age of 21 then you will have to have a 33bhp restricted limit for 2 years, unless you decide to do the unrestricted test after your 21st birthday to get the unrestricted license.

The bike looks nice mate, if it's cheap and in good nick? Not too sure about the reliability of the TZR's other than the problems two strokes can suffer.

If you are between 17 and 21, you can do your full motorbike test on a 125cc bike. On passing, you are then restricted for 2 YEARS to riding a bike with 33bhp or less. Once those 2 years are up, you can legally ride anything you like.

what is cost of test? is this sat after CBT?

Once you have the provisional entitlement (check the paper counterpart of your license, it will be under provisional entitlements - recent full car licenses include provisional motorcycle), you need to take the CBT before you can ride on the road with L-plates. You then need to take the theory (and hazard perception tests) and then you can take the practical test. CBT runs at around £70 give or take £30, the practical test is something in the region of £60 by itself as far as i know.
There are lots of bits on the forums already covering most of this - running a search on license is probably a good bet

Also if you are 20, I would ride on just a CBT until you are 21 and then take a DAS if I were you - otherwise you will be severely limited by the choice of bike IE 33bhp!

Do they have a CBT in the States then? I just assumed he was in the UK from the questions he was asking. I don't really know what they do in the States for a bike license, does anyone know?

I think they just have a bike test and once you pass you can ride what you like pretty much.

There is no CBT and there is no learner period as far as I know.

Although he's not likely to be from the states if he's buying a TZR125 because they are not big on 2 strokes.

I was thinking he might be from europe or eire or somewhere.

I think its likely he is from the UK but I just thought that we ought to check before we give him a load of useless info! Smile
